Shadowing A Dentist

Ok, so I know that for American Dental schools it is very important and in some cases a requirement to shadow a dentist for a certain number of hours. My first question is 1) how many hours should I be looking at getting in? (obviously varies by school i guess) and 2) can I shadow my cousin or does it have to be someone not related by blood or marriage? I'm asking because my cousin is a dentist in Montreal and since I go there almost every month and stay at his place he said i can stay there for 2 weeks during the summer and shadow him every day.

Just shadow your cousin. Make sure you take every opportunity to see what a dentist does and what you like about the career.

just as long as you don't say he's your cousin in AADSAS in the section where they ask if anyone in your family is in a dental related field.

I think there would be no issue shadowing your dentist cousin. after all you will be learning a lot from your cousin and could be very helpful also to you in the future. cheers

Aim for 50 hours and you are covered for any possible requirements. Shadowing your cousin is fine too.
