medschool and back into canada

Recommended Posts

I want to do my medical training in europe and come back here to practice medicine - what's it like getting back in. I know of a successful surgeon that couldn't qualify himself to get into Canada. What is the test for this qualification called?

So if you're dedicated enough to do medical school, you're dedicated enough to research your future options (and I realize posting here is part of that research). Check out the archives on this site, check out carms.ca and get back to us if you have specific questions.

Canada is a challenging place for foreign-trained physicians to become licensed (although it is possible). If your country/program are recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCSPC), then one may be eligible to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams (and preceeding exams such as the LMCC I and II and, for surgery, the Principles of Surgery exam). However, foreign trained physicians (including American trained physicians) frequently fail because the exams are different from their own licensing exams. Also, if the length of residency training was different than the length of training in Canada, then the physician often needs to do an additional year of training.

Recognized jurisdictions

If your country/program ISN'T on this list . . . well, what they say is "we will not process any application for credit for training in International PGME systems not listed below". I think what might happen is that you would end up having to re-do your residency.

Qualifier: I don't work for the RCPSC and have never tried to do this. You would be wise to contact the College and ask them what they think.

MontereyMD (see links below) is a US-trained Canadian (now American) who has some experience with the difficulties of trying to get back into Canada as a US trained specialist - you should read through his/her comments to get the perspective of someone who has tried to do just what you're proposing.

I would suggest that you look for a good billing agent who is/are local. If you are lucky to find a reputable and a good one they will even walk you through on what you need to do from registration for one membership to the other. Every provinces in Canada have local billing agents.
