How bad do you want it?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I don't know if this has been posted before or whatnot but I wanted to know for all you guys out there, how bad do you want to become a doctor? Why do you want to become a doctor? What is it about this profession that interests you? Is it prestige? Money? Family? Other? Is it worth going through so many years of schooling? What is life all about in your eyes? Is this the only way you see yourself gaining happiness of some sort? How did you come to choose this path? Haha I know, a lot of questions but I'll really appreciate it if you could share your story. A lot of thoughts have just been going through my head lately and I wanted to see what was going through some of yours... :)

heh, this thread title sounds like the start of a bad porno.

Anyways, med would be totally awesome, and I'm trying my hardest to get there. But if I never do, there really is more to life than becoming a doctor. And IMO, anyone who thinks otherwise is either a total square or has no perspective.

edit: I find it absolutely frightening when people say something along the lines of "I've wanted to be a doctor since I was a very small child and it's been the only thing I've ever wanted since", and if I were an adcom giving an interview that would raise a serious red flag for me.

Mikeyo... you watch some strange pornos...

Anyway - obviously it's not the only way to be happy... but I think I can achieve that goal and I'm willing to put in the time and energy to get there. Hence me going for MCAT write numero trois this January!

NewfieMika is right. Life is about the journey, not the goal. Once you reach the goal, there is always another journey and they don't end as long as there is life. My future is within health care, hopefully medicine, but if not I will be fulfilled. Life is about enjoying the journey, giving back to society, helping others, and smelling the flowers along the path.

LOL, our dean said something along these lines to a premed assembly the other day. I think the 10th graders were intimidated...:P

I am one of those who have wanted to be a doctor since I was little. It is no lie. My interest has always been genuine although the reasons for pursuing medicine have changed over the years. I have gone through times when I thought I was no longer interested in achieving this goal.

The fact is I want it "badly enough" that no matter how many times I try and forget about getting in, my mind eventually brings me back to the fact that what I really want is a career in medicine.

If it doesn't happen, the sky will not fall and time will continue marching on, and I am sure I will find something else fulfilling and rewarding to occupy me. Still, I do not want to leave any stone unturned before I give up on applying.
