rad86
Are radiology and nuclear medicine generally considered as two separate specialties? At Toronto, for example, nuc med is offered as a combined program with radiology. How are other schools like, both in Canada and in US? Is nuc med offered as a fellowship anywhere that can be added on top of a radiology residency?
Lactic Folly
There are straight nuclear medicine residencies, but with technologies such as PET-CT, the trend favours people who can read both. Yes, you can seek additional training in nuclear medicine after completing a radiology residency. However, in Canada, to become a certified specialist you will also have to take the Royal College exam in nuclear medicine.
rad86
Thanks for the response, Lactic Folly. Is it also possible to do a direct-entry nuc med residency and then later get certified in radiology through a fellowship?
Lactic Folly
You'd need to gain admittance into a radiology residency program. Technically, doing nuclear medicine after radiology isn't a fellowship either, since you have to fulfill the nuclear medicine residency training requirements.
