How does this work?

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am very confused about how the whole system works. Some medical schools only requires 2 years of undergrad and others require you to finish your degree. How does that work? That's say if you are admitted with only 2 years of undergrad, does that mean you go straight to medical school after the 2 years, or do you still have to finish your degree first? Sorry for my ignorance and thanks in advance.

I am not aware that any med school would consider two years nearly enough, although some look at your last two years or best two years.

Generally speaking, you apply while you are entering your last year of UG.

Actually, I think there's the odd school that will take people after 2nd year, and some after 3rd year. But, it's rare to get in that early. Generally people do at least an undergrad degree.

 

You should read through the admission requirements of schools you're interested in.

U of A takes some 2nd year applicants. U of A and Queen's take some 3rd years, as does McMaster, unless things have changed this cycle.

I think U oF Calgary does it too. That why I was wondering if I read it wrong. Thanks for answering.

UManitoba also considers 3rd-year applicants, as long as your Bachelor's degree will be finished by the time you actually start med school if you get in.

Look at the What Are My Chances Flowchart, at some point after the [i am Applying During] block there is a list of which schools accepts applicants with 2 year undergrad, 3 year and which ones require a degree.

To address the original question though: No you do not need to finish your degree if you are admitted after 2nd or 3rd year. Some people choose to finish it on the side through distance education, but you don't actually need to finish it.
