quereus
Hi there, I was just curious if research is essential (or very beneficial) to matching into a 5 year emergency residency? Thanks for the help.
cardiomegaly
Not essential, no. FRCP emerg is getting quite popular and competitive so it's always nice to get a leg up. Research can help you establish contacts and get your face known to the program. Emerg guys are usually looking for someone who will fit well into their program - likeability and competence I bet is more important.
crockett
I went to a talk given by an emerg program director, and research was one of the things they scored applicants on. I'd agree that your interview/references/performance in electives are probably given more weight, but in a competitive specialty when a lot of other applicants might have research under their belt it probably wouldn't have some of your own (preferably ER based research in this case).
