Viral Video: "Asians in the Library"

Recommended Posts

I looked through the forums and it seems that this hasn't been brought up yet, which surprised me given how much it's blown up. Or, if I'm blind, I guess this topic can be locked or deleted.

Essentially, last week a girl that goes to UCLA decided to make a rant about the behaviour of some fellow Asian [i assume Chinese] students in the library. View it here if you haven't seen it.

Since then, it's gone viral. It's all over news websites, and there are probably hundreds of video responses and

criticizing her for being racist. From what I've seen, the majority of people seem to think she deserves what she's getting.

She's had to take her presence off the internet, and probably in person as well. She's taken everything to do with her off the internet, but it being the internet, everything has been re-posted hundreds of times. If you ask me, while she is out of line and borders on racist, I don't think she deserves the extent of the criticism that she's getting.

What she really did was complained about a common incident in an ignorant and slightly racist fashion. But compare that to other instances of racism you've seen, what she's done is nothing in comparison. FOX News is probably just as bad, perhaps worse.

Yes, I do think she needed to be reprimanded in some way to learn her lesson, and I think that's happened. But the the way things are going, her life is RUINED. There seems to be talk (from sources of unverified credibility) that she's not even safe walking on campus. I saw some Google search hits speculating whether she'll be expelled, or if she can graduate. Can we really say that she deserves such dire consequences for posting a stupid 3-minute video?

So my question is... do YOU think she deserves all the attention and hate?

/end procrastination for the night

there seems to be a lot of girls going crazy nowadays, i don't think that other girl should have gotten as deep as she did since she wasn't being racist, she was making comments about behaviours that are correlated with a culture found in an area that happens to be primarily chinese; however, she was really insensitive and defiantly was inappropriate, plus pretty stupid (wear a mask or something, seriously, lol)

this other girl did this as a spoof (so they say), but it was so insensitive that people have been threatening her as well, personally i think this was so inappropriate that she deserves the backlash, but who knows what was going thru her head:

here's a funny mix up, sorry if it's a tad offensive, but it's really funny:

this one's better musically, but not as funny, lol:

I doubt she'll be expelled or barred from graduating. It's America, after all. First amendment. Even though I disagree with her opinion and believe she should be shamed and ridiculed in her comments, this definitely is an overreaction. What's really perplexing is the fact people are taking racism against Asians so seriously now, especially when much worse and offensive things have been said in the past.

Personally I did find her video to be a bit insensitive but I wouldn't say it's racist. Having had asian roommates, the parent part rings true to me.

What is definitely racist is the hundreds of comments calling her a cracker albino whore on youtube. But hey, there is no such thing as racism against whites so who cares.

Actually, what she said about asians talking on the phone IN the library being a bad thing is true.

Whether you're asian, white, bronze or black, you shouldn't talk on your phone when you're in a quiet library environment.

We should all accept that, point taken.

However, everything else she said in the video was INSANELY racist.

She said 'it's fine that ucla accepts tons of asians every year'...

LOL, it's fine? really? We have your permission? and you're not too disgruntled about it?

ucla accepts TONS of asians because statistically asians have some of the highest GPAs and standardized scores in america. (second highest I believe)

and east-asians are the 3rd wealthiest group on average because of their education.

Furthermore, she made mannerisms about how asians talk.. ching chong ting tong? wow dude.. immature... but i'm not HALF as offended by that as I am by her insanely racist tone on it being 'FINE' that ucla accepts tons of asians.

I won't even talk about how hilariously ironic her comments on 'american culture' were.

p.s. I'd like to mention I'm not asian or even part asian.

I don't think she deserved all the hate though what she said is outrages. Talking on the phone in the library should be addressed but not in that manner. Also, there isn't a correlation between ethnicity and talking on the phone... Dunno what she was thinking posting something like that on YouTube. Also shows how easy it is to get continental attention over the span of a few days nowadays...

I don't see how any of that is INSANELY racist.

She didn't specify if she was talking about international students. If, for example, UCLA accepts a whole lot of international students from asian countries then I can see how she may have a problem with that.

As for the ching chong ting tong, yeah obviously that's immature but I wouldn't call it racist. People imitate southern american accents when making fun of so called rednecks, are they racist?

As for American culture, I'm not going to touch that one because it's too sticky of a topic and will probably result in a flame war and closed thread.

In the end, though insensitive, she had every right to say what she said. And now even though she is getting death threats and needs police escort, people still fail to see who the real racists are.

But the most mind blowing is the fact that this crap even went viral, I mean honestly who cares about some girls opinion??

LOL!

According to your stance, you must agree the people who called her an 'albino cracker racist whore' had every right to call her that.

Good stuff dude. You're a pretty neutral guy!

well free speech is 1 thing but those guys are:

1) vulgar

2) actually racist

3) practicing hate speech (although I'm not sure if that's illegal in the US)

there is a difference between noting some social behaviors of Asian people (which may or may not be true) and calling someone a whore and using racially charged slurs.

I think you're perhaps reading into it a bit much.

"Which is fine" does not imply that she is asserting whether it's ok with her or not, that UCLA accepts lots of Asians. She is merely saying "What I am NOT complaining about is the fact that there are so many Asians, but what I am complaining about is that..."

Take this for example... "The burger totally tasted like it was made at McDonald's, which is fine, but they should not charge $15 for that kind of burger."

As for the ching ching ling long ting tong thing... that's really REALLY old. Yes, it's immature and ignorant, but in all honesty, that's not a bad representation of what it sounds like to someone who doesn't know Chinese. Whether it's offensive/racist or not depends on the CONTEXT in which she is using it. Is she making fun of Chinese and how it sounds? I don't think so; the main point she's making is that "this is what I remember hearing" and "talking in the library IN GENERAL is annoying".

As an alternate example, people who imitate French put "le" and "la" in front of everything and put on a haughty, elitist air. It's not racist unless they're trying to insult the French.

Haha, it's useless attempting to have a reasonable discussion by these responses.

I'm right, you're wrong. You'll figure it out by yourself.

What, exactly, is the point of making such a video and posting it with your FACE on the internet? I don't understand some people. I mean, even if you actually feel this way, it requires a new level of idiocy to publicize it like that.

I cannot take this woman seriously because of the following:

1. her valley girl accent (oddly, people from certain Toronto neighborhoods sound like this too)

2. her horrible orange tan and platinum hair

3. her pathetic attempt at cleavage

4. her showboating to gain fame. In this case it kinda backfired. She's not good looking enough to fill an Ann Coulter role.

To comment on her points:

1. Talking in the library is stupid. However it is unavoidable that students will talk in the library. This is why one should study at home.

2. Asian moms cook and clean for their kids so that their kids can study more and get higher GPAs then those white kids that have to "fend for themselves". But don't feel so bad, because those same asian kids will grow up and feel obligated to care for their elderly parents with ailing health, while this white chick will just drop them off at the ER with packed suitcases.

3. Political science is not a real degree. It's an oxymoron as much as real WWF-wrestling is an oxymoron.

lol - am I missing something, or is this pretty much the same form of ignorance and unneeded hate as impersonating a chinese accent?

the only reason this video blew up is because it's a dumb white blonde, with big boobs, and an orange tan... pretty much a parody of today's jersey shore culture... if it was some random ugly dude, no one would care... there's millions of way more racist video on youtube... yea it was ignorant, but the thing that annoys me more is people who are suddenly so offended by what people say on the internet... i mean, asians talk on the phone in the library and bring their family to cook for them on the weekends - ignorant, yea, but c'mon, who cares... like i said, there are much much more racist things on the internet, and if she wasn't a snooki-look-a-like, no one would care what her thoughts on university life are lol

trolling for amusement, lol.

but honestly, cantonese-speaking girls are usually hotter than the mandarin ones.

HAHAHA; because we're tall and don't have squinty ass eyes? :P

BTW. I am asian. I think this is hilarious. She's just jealous her mom doesn't care enough to make her real food and do her grocery shopping on the weekend. ;)

in that sense i agree, i'm not sure why they choose to call the program political science, it really should be called political studies.

If politics can be considered a science, so can religion and fictional literature.

I do not downplay the rigor of the field, nor the academic ability required to excel in it. I merely think it is inaccurately named.
