w01313ly
Currently, I'm in my third of 5 years studying medicine in London. I was wondering if anyone knew the steps i would need to take to practise in BCt - i do MCCEE then CaRMS. Is that right? I want to come after I graduate so was hoping I could do my residency there? Does anyone know/ have any advice? regards
bwbl
From what I understand, if you are not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to get a Residency position in Canada...especially in BC, which is considered one of the most competitive provinces and is often seen as one of the least friendly towards International Medical Graduates. The main (official) reason for this is that there are very few post-graduate/residency training positions in Canada (usually not that many more positions than the number of graduates that Canadian medical schools graduate each year). Your best bet is to either stay in the UK for a few years after graduation and then apply to BC to do a Fellowship (a Fellowship in North America is somewhat equivalent to the Specialist Registrar in the UK). The other alternative is to try for the US. You can always complete your Residency in the US and then write the qualifying exams for Canada...that's probably the "easiest" (i.e. most straightforward) way. To get into the US, you need to do the USMLEs (Step 1, Step 2CK and Step 2CS). Hope that helps a bit.
Robin Hood
If you want to do Family Medicine, FM residency in the UK is recognized by the CFPC.

For surgical specialties, Isn't a fellowship more equivalent to a consultant doing additional training. Our senior residents would be like the specialist registrar level. Fellows have already passed their Royal College and are able to practice independently in their specialty.
Robin Hood
If you're not a Canadian citizen/PR, you can only do residency in Quebec and NL.
