How to improve my competitiveness for Psych in Canada?

Recommended Posts

Can you not die during the CaRMS application process? Can you refrain from punching your interviewers in the face? Yes? Then you should be fine.

Seriously, psych is one of the least competitive programs. Don't worry about step scores or anything. They don't carry much weight in Canada. The only thing you should probably do is some on-site electives. So set up a 2 week elective at both Toronto and McGill. You could always add a couple other Canadian Schools as extra electives, or even stop by for a few days for site visits. That would get your face known, and give you some Canadian reference letters.

As a US grad, you are counted as a CMG (Canadian Medical Grad) so you can enter the first round.

If you go on the CaRMS website (carms.ca) you can get info on all the psych programs as well as match reports from the past 6 or 7 years.

Although psych is not competitive overall, certain programs (typically UofT, McGill and maybe UBC) usually fill all of their spots due to the quality of the programs and being in desirable locations.

If you set up some electives at each of the schools you are interested in you will be fine.
