FM Programs at U of A

As a Med 3 I can tell you the FM residents in the program are happy, friendly people who love their program director - Dr. Shirley Shipper is an incredible lady and extremely well respected. Her presentations to us in preclinical were pretty inspiring.

 

In terms of setup, FMR1s spend half their year in hospital rotations (Internal x 2, CCU, Emerg, Peds emerg) and half their year in clinic. They have Obs 24 hr call shifts distributed throughout the year. FMR2s do surgery, ortho and a few other things along with clinic.

 

Red Deer is very competitive, they probably take 1 out of every 10 applicants. Grand Prairie is also competitive. Rural spots are harder to match to than urban in Alberta.
