Hi, I'm considering doing medicine in the UK but possibly coming back to Canada for residency. I heard it's much more competitive to be internationally trained and wanting to do residency and practice in Canada. Can someone please clarify the procedure and chances of getting a spot. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You would need to apply through the IMG program for the given province in which you hope to do residency. Each province runs their own show and has their own rules... so there is no unified answer to the question you are asking. As well, the match is currently in the process of being changed to allow IMG's greater access... however, adding more people to the competition for the same number of residency spots does not necessarily mean that there will be any real increase in access...

Overall, those that are internationally trained have a much harder go at getting a residency spot at all let alone one that they find to be 'desirable' (in both specialty and location). THere are thousands of IMG's waiting for a residency spot and most of them, in Ontario at least, will end up in family medicine in a location of the province's choice... and with a 4 year underserviced area return of service commitment.
