Literature Searches

Hi,

 

I'm in my first research job and I'm going to be asked to do literature searches. Can someone explain what this might consist of and what the significance of this is? Finding papers or simply doing searches? I just want to have an understanding before I go into my first day at work because I'm really confused as to how this could help a researcher.

Lol, you basically find articles on the topic. Possibly summarize them. Possibly summarize them and write them up into sections that can be used for upcoming publications. Possibly locate articles that cannot be found online. The significance factor is pretty low, but you have to start somewhere.

It this a paying job or volunteer work? Considering you don't know what a literature search is how did you get the job (if it's not volunteer) in the first place? lol

The best thing you can do is ask your campus librarian. They'll walk you through it step by step.

Its significance is to understand current research, background info, what's known/not known, methods/techniques, basically everything about the topic you're working on.
