Guest ikaj
Hi can someone confirm that UofA will be doubling class size in the near future. From 120 to 240? If true when will this take place and is this an attempt to alleviate the doc shortage? thnks
Guest summervirus
Umm. I don't think I've heard anything of the sort. Where did you hear about this doubling?
Guest kaymcee
The logistics of such a dramatic increase in class size should indicate how plausible the idea is. BC has done something like this, but in a gradual process by building satellite campuses and increasing the enrollment over the course of several years. Guest summervirus
As far as I know, there are no plans to increase the class size at this time. As mentioned before, there is no capacity to support such a large increase in numbers. Besides, after class size reaches a certain number, further increases are arguably not the best way to deal with the shortage of doctors; after all, it takes 6+ years (in many instances 9-10 years) before any effect will occur. Alternatively, there has been an increase interest in recruiting international medical graduates and allowing them to retrain in residency here in Canada as one of the ways to help with the doctor shortage.
