Worth getting Irish Citizenship?

Recommended Posts

I'm a Canadian student attending UCC's graduate entry medicine program in the fall and was looking into getting my Irish citizenship by descent (via my grandmother). I was wondering if this is worth my time. I know that it can sometimes be a struggle to land a residency in Canada or the US following graduation and wanted to know if having a Irish citizenship would land me any benefits in applying to either Ireland or the EU if it became necessary for me.

Yes, absolutely get it.

1. After graduation you'll compete with the other non-visa applicants for Irish (or UK, or other EU) post-graduate training. Any applicants who need a work permit for Ireland are only offered jobs AFTER all the EU graduates regardless of ranking.

2. Even if you don't stay in Ireland, you'll avoid immigration and visa hassles and fees during medical school.
