Mock Q: treatment options

Here's the situation: you're a doctor treating a cancer patient. The patient visits you and tells you about a new treatment they read about. Apparently, it has shown promising results. You, as a doctor, decide to check this out and have to admit that it looks promising. However, you know that this treatment is not an option, due to the massive costs involved (i.e. more patients could be treated using conventional methods vs. this one patient being treated using the new method).

 

How do you explain this to the patient? Is it ethical to discourage potentially life-saving treatment, based on price tag?

I'm well up on all the world topics, and as far as I know I'm easy to get along with. So it's not so much what I say or how I act that is worrying me for interviews: it's my hair. Right now I got this shag out thing that I haven't cut since August. When I was volunteering yesterday I got comments on how good it looks. But, every med student I ever see has that run-of-the-mill flip up in the front thing, or they are going bald. I don't want to get a flip up in the front, considering I had that before and I don't enjoy it. However, the thought that a really conservative interviewer will percieve me as some "hippie punk kid" because of my big hair and deny me a fair shot at admittance crosses my mind. What does everyone think about this?
