AsYouWish
As far as the extremely competitive specialties go (optho/derm/plastics), how important is research, really? For someone in a 3-year school, I'm finding it difficult to allocate time to research. Finding a research project to work on is also proving difficult given the small size of the program I am interested in and the fact that all preceptors are very busy with clerks/residents, etc... I have no research background. Can someone please comment on this? Are there any successful stories of people matching to competitive specialties with no research? If someone has any advice for me, please PM me
mavrik13
As always... some will match without research, others will have a PhD in a related field. Does it matter? Everyone I've talked to says yes. Is it the sole determining factor, or a red flag if it is missing? No. Can it help you stand out among equally qualified candidates? Absolutely. Talon01
I got into a fairly competitive field with zero research.
