Guest nubar89
Do you agree with salary caps for specialists in Canada? (I got this question at my U of T interview last week from a cardiologist).
Guest shutterbug
Many specialists are paid on an FFS basis. So, the amount of service is related to the amount of money paid out. If you cap the amount paid out what would happend to the amount of services rendered. Would specialists be required to continue to perform addiitonal patients even if their cap is exceeded. How would you compensate the specialist for the additional overhead costs associated with the additional patients; i.e. equipment, travel expenses, supplies, insurance, staff salaries, etc. Some specialists may elect to (essentially) volunteer their time. But, they also have to consider the mortage on their house, student loans, car laons, etc. And, in the end, I suspect that many specialists would severely curtail or possibly stop their services after their cap had been met. You wouldn't ask anyother profession to work for free...why would medicine be any different especially with huge opportunity cost (i.e. money you could have made by working elsewhere). So, in the quest to limit costs you risk limiting the number of services rendered as well.
