I'm wondering if someone could explain to me the path(s) involved in becoming an Pediatric Orthopedic surgeon. Do you do peds first, then ortho? Or ortho, then peds?

Thanks!

Hey Megs,

I am not entirely sure, but I am fairly certain that you would first do orthopedics and then a pediatric fellowship. I can't imagine it being the other way around, it doesn't make sense really.

Sounds really sub-specialized..:)

That sounds about right, probably 6-7 years. Nowawdays, the department will probably ask you to pursue a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) as well.

Ortho 5 years, pediatric ortho fellowship only one year, maybe two if you want to learn about Ilizarov techniques.

Very fun surgery.
