Got a few inboxes from med students who are considering a US residency, so I thought I'd host an AMA. Answers to most common questions I got : Undergrad - In Ontario GPA - 3.70 MCAT - 512 Research in Undergrad - 1 year in a research lab without any publications (I got played by the professor who made me do all the work and fired me as we approached publication). Med school - Caribbean Big 4 (AUC/SGA/SABA/Ross - don't go anywhere else because they are NOT fully accredited and will ruin your odds of matching) Residency - GIM How many attempts to get residency - First try Visa status - J1 in USA, Canadian citizen, no other passports USMLE Step1/2 CK/3 - 242/245/251 Research in medschool - 4 case reports published, (surprisingly, they also get read!) Current year - PGY2 Future plans - Likely will not do fellowship, considering practicing in Canada vs USA at this time

Hi everyone, I was wondering whether someone knows the process of getting your license in the US (ex: Texas) after graduating from a Canadian dental school. Is it difficult? Are there lots of hoops to jump through? Any kind of information is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys! I have recently found out that US med schools under the LCME can allow residency in Canada. If I were to do my undergrad in Canada and go to an LCME med school in the US, would it be easy to get residency in Canada or not? Thanks!

I'd like to be a resource for people. Something that I never had. Feel free to ask any questions regarding the application process, CBSE, 4 vs 6, interviews, grades, etc. I'm a mid-level resident at a 6 year program. NB

Hi everyone, I am a third year DO student in the states who is interested in IM and want to specialize in cardiology or nephrology. I understand IM residencies are competitive as an IMG in Canada so I'm planning to finish IM residency in the states. However, I would like to complete fellowship in Canada if possible because I'd like to come back home as early as I can and cardiology fellowship is harder to get as a visa holder. I'm wondering if I can apply for fellowship as an US IM resident. If not, is it possible to subspecialize after coming back to Canada? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Hi Everyone, In brief, I am a PhD student studying medicine in Canada. My biggest hurdle as I apply to medical schools is most definitely my GPA. >undergrad GPA: 2.8 >graduate GPA: 3.9 (Though this is a thesis-based degree, I have taken a course (or two) every single semester over my 5 year PhD) [Based off of this year's entry statistics for almost all Canadian and US schools, my MCAT score is competitive. I have hundreds of hours of extracurricular activities ranging from volunteering, community service, student groups, leadership, etc. I have 100+ hours of shadowing in different clinics/services. 10+ pubs in mid-high tier journals (4 first author), various long-term employment experiences, etc etc.] At this time, it seems very unlikely that I'll make it past the GPA cutoffs for all Canadian schools based off of conversations with advisers, weighted GPA calculations, etc. This has pushed me to look in the direction of US schools. Are there any US MD schools (not DO) that look favorably to PhD students? And a step-further: Canadian PhD students? I have zero intention of changing my career path, so I have also entertained the idea of EU or AUS schools, though I am very aware of the obstacles, costs, and residency challenges associated. Eager to gather some input from this forum! Some guidance would be appreciated.
