In the end, I chose RBC because they had a location closer to my house and because their online user interface annoyed me less. Otherwise I found the two options very equivalent.

What kind of perks did you get?

Nothing special, just the same they offer everyone: 275k with a 2 yr grace period after residency + VIP banking package and Infinite Avion visa (w/ the standard bonus points) with fees waived through school + a free iPhone/iWatch.

I think some people have found that the Scotia credit cards have some better perks, but the Avion card has all the features that I particularly wanted, so I am pretty happy with it. If all else is equal to you in terms of perks, it’s helpful to thing about convenience and the customer service experience to help you decide.

I'm still on the fence about who to go with, but one major downside of the RBC card for me is that they only give $250 of coverage in case of a delayed flight. If you have to overnight at, say, Toronto-Pearson, that's nothing. Scotia at least brings it up to $500.... When I had to fly b/w the prairies and Toronto/Montreal/northeastern US in the winter, I'd end up having to overnight because of delays/cancellations a bunch of times, so if you're thinking about interview season in January of M4...

But wow, these "premium" cards sure have terrible insurance.

The 30000 points is the sign-up bonus and the iPad is an account opening bonus

Ah ok. This is both from RBC?

Does scotia have something similar?

also does anyone have a contact for the medical student specialist for LOCs in Vancouver?

Yes that's for RBC. Soctiabank gives 25000 points as signup bonus with the Passport Infinite if you spend 1000 in the first 3 months.

Please check out the main LOC thread, I know there's lots of pages but you should find the info you want there. I hear that Cindy O'Hara is a great Scotiabank advisor in the Vancouver area. The RBC contacts on the RBC website are pretty reliable.

Are the banking fees are waived through until end of residency/fellowship or only through medical school?

I know Scotiabank waives fees until the end of residency/fellowship...so that difference could add up over 4-6 years.
