gpa calculation - course requirements

Okay,

I know that this has been asked several times - but I just really noticed the disclaimer that western in order to consider your gpa for a single year needs 3 full year courses AT that level.

I completed my third year and have a gpa of 3.71 on the osmas scale for that year. For my first and second years I don't meet the minimum requirement of 3.7. I would like my third year to be evaluated as part of my overall gpa, howEVER in my third year I took 2.5 second year credits & 2.5 third year credits. I mainly took the second year credits because they were not in my specialist program and I needed to take them in order to take higher level courses in that discipline. ( I am a chem specialist, and in my second year I had to take required chem courses in order to go further -4/5 were picked for me - that's why in my third year I ended up taking 2nd year genetics ( half course), and history ( full year) and english ( full year). They had to be second year courses because I didn't have the prereqs for higher level courses and I wanted to learn more in those areas).

My question is ( after all that explanation) am I out of luck? Should I even bother applying to Western anymore this year? My marks in my third year level courses are my highest marks, so taking lower level courses hasn't proven any real advantage to me.

Sorry about the length of this message.

Hi Malsa,

I think that the idea of that disclaimer is to keep people from stacking their schedules with easy 100-level course (000 level courses at UWO). While it does say that you need 3 courses at a given level, degree program requirements are such that that is not always possible. I think that so long as you are taking the course you are (5.0 senior credits), you should be alright, but just to be sure (and safe!), email Darla in the Admissions Office your question and she'll give you the official word.

Best of luck!

Timmy
