Resident salary

Recommended Posts

All residents in Ontario make the same base income as per the PARO contract. Similarly, each province has their own contact and salary scale. It can be seen here: https://myparo.ca/your-contract/#annual-salary-scale. A PGY-1 starting this July will make $62,227.83. I do not know if there are any specific parking stuff, and suspect it will vary by hospital.

Hi there !

How much does a PGY-1 in Ontario make in average ? I mean, including call stipends. And how much do tuition fees cost for residents ?

Do parkings at hospitals cost half price for residents like in Quebec ?

Thanks a ton !

Other people have answered your salary questions. Parking is generally not half off for residents in other provinces, although depending on the site there may be discounts. It's hit or miss. Call stipends also vary by province and are set by the provincially negotiated contract. In MB, I think we make about 116 for a weekday overnight call shift, maybe 216 for a weekend 24 hr call shift, and home call is a bit less than those unless you are in the hospital past midnight and it can be converted to in house call pay. That's how it works here anyway. Tuition varies by university. It's about $1000 at U of M and payment is arranged through our employer so it comes out of our paycheque instead of a lump sum fee. This will vary by school!

How does the call stipend work? For example (just making these numbers up), if I have 1 in 8 home call for FM for 4 months in my first year, is it roughly (31 x 4 / 8) x $63.80 (i.e., number of 1 in 8 home calls across 4 months multiplied by the Ontario home-call stipend)?

If you are 1 in 8 its typically 1 in 8 work days ie. 2.5 calls per 20 work day block, and I'm assuming you mean first 4 blocks, so it would be 2.5x4=10 times the stipend = $638 (pretax) in addition to the salary.
