Haribo7173
Hello all (but I'm assuming fellow psych residents/practicing psychiatrists may be more suited to answering this), I'm potentially interested in consultation-liaison psychiatry and I was wondering how much of a fellowship specialty CL psych is. Are there any particularly good fellowships in Canada or the US? Are jobs mostly in academic centers? Is a strict CL practice a thing? Thanks for any input! LostLamb
Depends where you live, I think, as to whether or not you’d be ok doing solely C-L. Everyone I know does C-L and something else (inpatients or outpatients) since volumes are inconsistent. There is no Royal College subspecialty in C-L in Canada. Of those I know that work in the field: I know people who did a fellowship in the US and I know people who challenged the US exam. I also know people who did nothing more than 5 year RC training. Hope that helps! LL
Haribo7173
Thank you, very helpful! I’m in a major urban area where I’m hoping to practice post-residency.

You’d have to ask others in your centre who do the kind of work you hope to do about feasibility. Haribo7173
Snowmen
Not a psychiatry resident but did a C-L psychiatry rotation during residency. The attendings did roughly 50/50 C-L and outpatient work in a niche of their choosing. Their fellowship was in the niche they chose for the outpatient component rather than C-L itself.
