Snooz
Just venting. Saw that CMPA fees have been doubled this year due to poor market returns/increased medico-legal fees. Am already struggling to pay down the LOC due to rising COL, tuition, and increased CPP contributions. This feels like another punch to the gut . shikimate
2023 was an abnormally LOW year for CMPA fees. 2024 fees are more reflective of what the rate has USUALLY been. Btw, people in ON should be venting, because you guys are paying 10x what I am paying lol. Are personal injury lawyers camping out in tents outside UHN these days or something?? Also this is something that med school never teaches properly, but every medical student should learn about the fixed expenses of running a practice. I'll give some examples here: 1) royal college/CFPC fees - even if you only do MAINPORT, you still have to pay full amount 2) CMPA fee 3) provincial medical association (yes, it's mandatory) + CMA (sometimes can opt out) 4) lawyer fee if incorporated 5) accountant fee 6) hospital medical staff dues and specialty association fee
Bluberblubo
22 hours ago, Snooz said: This feels like another punch to the gut . Lol I would pay anything that the CMPA asks me to. They are the only group whose fees are mandatory AND that would actually provide you with a service that you need and is helpful. Also, their fees are actually not that high if you consider how much work goes into a case and how much lawyer fees are. Of the list of fixed expenses that shikimate posted above, the CMPA is basically the only organization that hasn't in one way or another fucked us. Also if you're in Ontario you can apply for the cmpa rebate and get the vast majority of the fees reimbursed. Your post should actually read "Thank you CMPA for actually reducing the cost for a year for us when there were not as many complaints instead of pocketing the money like every other group or association" ChemPetE and shikimate
shikimate
Agree with poster above. Think of it this way. CMPA is the only organization that actually gave members a DISCOUNT when they could afford to, everybody else keep raising their fees. Here is a list of "dirty laundry" for the other organizations, in case people here are too young to remember: [1] OMA: failure of negotiation resulted in MULTI-YEAR fee cut to Ontario physicians around 2013: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/doctor-shortages-loom-if-ontario-fee-cuts-imposed-oma-1.1131377 [2] Royal College: in the old times, if you use their CME system only, you pay a lower fee (makes sense, since you are not using their other benefits. Nowadays, you have to pay full fee, even if you don't have "fellowship" of RC [3] LMCC: tried to do online for LMCC Part 2, some SP didn't even show up, complete failure (lots of posts about it on Premed101 here) And we haven't even gotten into the myriad of other problems that have been buried. I'll just leave 2 old articles here for people to ponder (if you think these problems are new for the 2020s era, they aren't) https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/one-in-five-newly-certified-medical-specialists-unemployed-in-2017-study-shows-1.4403295 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/health-care-medicine-doctors-locum-travel-licence-1.4795274

I agree with the above posters that they are the only medical organization that is 100% on your side. As a doctor. Every other organization is just taking a pound of flesh because they can.
