USA Certified- Internal Medicine, CPSBC vs CPSO vs Royal College

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen, current US internal medicine resident (3 year program) interested in working in BC/ON after graduation.

CPSBC (USA certified pathway) and CPSO (Pathway A, Pathway C) both have a new-ish pathway for US certified physicians despite differences in training (IM is 3y in US, 4-5y in Canada). It sounds to me like I will be eligible for both BC/ON pathways but may not be eligible for fellowship (IM/GIM) with RCPSC.

My questions are:

1. Do I need to be RCPSC fellowed in IM/GIM to work in BC/ON? Or so long as I obtained licensure/registration through CPSBC/CPSO I'll be fine?

If yes, 2. What are the implications on job options (and billing limitations, for instance) in BC/ON, respectively, given my circumstance? I'm concerned I may not be able to work/bill as an internist (but rather as a GP) given i'm not RCPSC fellowed.

3. can I work both as a internist and a general internist (if there is a difference at all)

thanks in advance!
