What are you thoughts on "academic" requirements of the new Toronto med school?

Their selection process is like an EDI vomit to be honest.

1. Accepting lower than 3.3 GPA if you are black, indigenois or "equity-deserving". Masks off I guess. No one can say "thEy StiL HAve tO mEEt HiGH acaDeMiC sTanDard".

2. 75% of seats are allocated based on skin colour and your marginalized status.

3. EDI-oriented personal statement questions.

What a joke! Honestly, it would be such a bummer and an embarrassment to study there. Also, hand up if you want to be treated by a doctor with a GPA below 3.3.

Let's be honest, because medical school seat demand far outstrips supply, it is a commodity, and government is the sole supplier of the commodity. This is especially true since USMD are now counted as IMG.

When the government is in charge of a resource, you can bet that it will distribute resources not according to supply and demand, or based on foresight or economic principles. It will distribute the resources based on expediency, political deal-making, and rewarding its donors/backers.

Let's stop pretending there is a meritocratic system in play. Maybe if you are in high school, you can still drink this cool aid. But once you are in undergrad and beyond, you should realize that almost every interest in society, be it an internship, a job, an admission, a lucrative deal, a promotion, a tenure, even a LMIA/PR card/citizenship, whatever, will invariably involve something that's NOT meritocratic.

Sucks for applicants. 

Should be based solely on income in my honest opinion which I think is the biggest barrier to medicine at this point. 

It's the easiest to track and doesn't involve shades of grey. Is someone who is half black included? How about someone who self identifies as LGBT/marginalized (unsure if this is part of the pathway)

Is someone who's parents who are both physicians but is a person of colour really at a disadvantage? Probably...but not as much as the kid who can't afford university and got kicked out of the house at 18.
