I just read this today. It is SO disappointing that someone would do that to their child. I would have a hard time being the physician/ob treating this patient.

Mother charged with murder after refusing C-section

Last Updated Fri, 12 Mar 2004 10:45:06

SALT LAKE CITY - A woman who refused to undergo a caesarean section was charged with murder on Thursday for delivering a stillborn child.

Prosecutors in Salt Lake City say Melissa Ann Rowland, 28, exhibited "depraved indifference to human life" when she told doctors she would rather allow her twins to die than undergo a surgical delivery.

One of the twins was stillborn when Rowland eventually went into labour.

Rowland is being held in a Salt Lake County jail on a first-degree felony count of criminal homicide.

If convicted, she could be sentenced to life in prison.

Documents filed in Salt Lake City allege that, during the final month of her pregnancy, doctors repeatedly warned Rowland that her unborn children could die if she didn't get medical attention.

They say that Rowland refused to undergo an immediate surgical delivery on Jan. 2, even though a doctor told her that the babies were in grave danger.

In a visit to a second hospital the same day, Rowland allegedly told a nurse that she would rather "lose one of the babies than be cut like that."

Rowland has since denied saying that.

The stillborn baby was alive until two days before Rowland delivered it on Jan. 13, according to a doctor who performed the autopsy.

The autopsy concluded that the baby would have lived had Rowland undergone the caesarean delivery when she was advised to do so.

Rowland, described as the married mother of a number of other children, is scheduled to make her next court appearance March 16.

Her bail has been set at $250,000 US.
