Older Med Students

Okay Here goes.......I know that there has been several discussions regarding older students on this forumn but I wanted to pick people's brains for some more specific information.

I am 33 years old and plan to apply for med school next year. I want to specialize after med school and although I know I'll probably change my mind several times, at this point I am very interested in Surgery.

My inquiry to you all is your opinions on an older applicant. Not just for med school but, more improtantly, for the Match down the road. We all know that there shouldn't be any preference given due to age but what is the reality? It seems to me that given a surgical residency to a young "fresh" MD would be preferable to an "old fart".
