Wow, I was looking at the SDN thread and I'm kind of shocked. I guess they're being extra cautious because they don't know how the December people will respond. So there will be a lot of WL movement at least.

Wow, why is NYU showing no love this year? I heard they were acceptance whores last cycle... but all in all, it should be the same right? Do you know if they inform you of the "tier" of waitlist... like top 3rd etc. Better yet, it would be awesome if they gave you the exact rank. Any Canadians gotten the big Acceptance this time around?

Kinda disappointing; though very thankful I wasn't outright rejected. I was banking on this to give me that extra boost today but noooooooo...

I guess we'll just have to stand in line some more...

Almost everyone on SDN (+ a friend of mine) who was outright rejected was Canadian...so you should feel good about the WL.

Some thoughts: Just judging from SDN it looks like they gave out more acceptances in December than they did today (?).

When I interviewed back in November, my interview group was given the vibe that "if you want to go to NYU, you can *wink*." Apparently no one who interviewed more recently got that impression.

Theory: NYU "interviewed" certain people early so that they could accept them December. They then interviewed everyone else to fill in the gaps in their class and create a lengthy waitlist. I think it's obnoxious.

I don’t think they’re being obnoxious - they certainly seem to have sent out the bulk of the acceptances in December. Perhaps more of the December people have held onto their acceptances than NYU expected, limiting the number of people they could accept outright today.

I'm really sorry about your rejections guys.

Rejection sucks big time.

I've searched some of the old threads on NYU waitlists,

and one of the threads mentioned that the receptionist told him/her that (now this is 2005 or something) they accepted about 300 people and waitlisted about 300 people and rejected the rest in March.

I don't know if this still holds true since it seems like not too many acceptances went out today, but if you add in the December acceptances, it may be quite a large number.

However, if everything remains as similar as previous years, many will turn down the NYU offer and in the end, about 450 spots will be offered to fill the class size of 160. (the number has remained pretty much constant over the last few years; last year was 435)

I think about 100~150 people will be taken off the waitlist.

This is largely a speculation, but there is hope.

The only thing is that the waitlist starts to move at around May 12~14, which means... more waiting.

Yeah that's why you see it's mostly S+ with only a couple S- on the list. Only some schools (like UCs, Vanderbilt, Mayo, etc) do pre-secondary screening.

Thanks guys...I wasn't expecting it at all especially after the waitlist/rejection from Cornell. I'm going to talk it over with my parents and likely withdraw from NYU. I hope one of you gets the spot.

Schnauzr the decision came via Fedex (I'm guessing because they need the financial aid forms in a couple weeks). I'm rooting for ya!

I'm still leaning toward Vanderbilt because of cost. If Columbia gives me a good offer I'll consider it. Nyu doesn't offer any aid, so I don't think I need to hold onto another p/f lecture based NYC school (even though I liked it a lot).
