Hi Saberial,

We've got one of these threads running in the Moderator's Area, but I think that it's time we broke our silence and let the general public in on how things went on Wednesday.

I did exceptionally well with the match! I got my 1st choice, which was Western anaesthesia, so I'm totally stoked! Thanks a lot for asking! :D

Best of luck!

Timmy

wow, congrats TimmyMax! I'm excited for you and hope you will enjoy it. Did you attend Western? If not, what were your reasons for choosing it as your first choice?

Hey kellyl20.. I'm still a premed so I dont know what all of these numbers mean.. does it mean you got accepted in ALL of these residency spots and you get to choose one? If so, which one did you choose? I see you are from Quebec too.. which med school did you go to?

Congrats!

To Mad,

All those numbers mean that there are residency programs that haven't filled completely, so there are still some residency spots available for people entering the 2nd round of CARMS. I guess it's not a myth when people say Internal Medicine isn't popular at our school (11 places left in Sherbrooke).

So, do we all become moderators in 4th year ? :b

Hey muchdutch,

Yeah, I did medical school at Western, so I get to stay here for five more years, which is perfectly cool with me. Reasons why I stayed were many, but amongst the most important of them included the fact that Western has a strong anaesthesia program, a truly excellent program director, cool staff and residents and the familiarity factor of knowing the hospitals, region and not having to uproot myself. Also, having a significant other whose family is from London doesn't hurt, either! And one more thing, matching to London means that I won't have to move, which means we get to spend one extra week in New Zealand in June!!! :D

Best of luck!

Timmy

Congratulations everyone on your CaRMS match!

cheech10, I have a question for you about how intense is the competition to get into U of T internal medicine. (This is where I want to be in 3 years :) ) How important are clerkship grades (H/P/F) and evaluations, or references? Is it okay if you show your interest via electives and research experiences in the field, but don't have many Honours in your transcript?

Thanks!

Congratulations to everybody on the match! Three more years until I'm there...

Question for the 4th years: I was under the impression that UWO's general surgery programme was pretty well-regarded. Does anybody have insight/rumours/etc as to why there were so many slots unfilled this year?

whoa.... what's this about 1 unmatched spot at Dal? I though Ophtho is an extremely competitive res. Has thing changed? ie. more spot added or people are just not interested in opththo anymore?

Hey,

There are a number of rumous as to why four of the five general surgery spots at UWO went unfilled. I think that a major contributor to this was what happened last year with UWO having the luxury of "the four horsemen" (four general surgery keeners who were all-stars in every right and also hard core in every respect) applying (and eventually matching to) UWO general surgery, so that they could be selective in who they wanted (and ranked) with respect to the fifth and final spot. From that, I think that the program got pretty cocky and again tried to seek out the hardest of the hardcore and in doing so turned off a lot of people. Pair this with the reputation of UWO as being a hardcore, old school surgery program (with the associated horror stories) and that just didn't jive with this year's crop of applicants. It's kind of like the flameout of the Canadian hockey team at the Olympics. If you take a garbage approach, you get garbage results. A little humble pie never hurt anyone. That's my two cents.

Best of luck!

Yes Ophtho is still a very competitive and desireable speciality.

However spots (and medical students) often go unmatched for a whole whack of reason--many of which have nothing to do with the quality of the program or the applicants. Often it boils down to a bad ranking strategy. Or just bad luck. Other times it may have something to do with "politics" (ie a particular specialty may have issues with fees or workloads in a specific province).

Hi Byronique,

Toronto IM is usually quite competitive to match into among IM programs. References are extremely important, especially coming from staff known to the admissions committee members (obviously, most of their contacts are also at UofT, and I can't recall anyone that matched this year without having done an elective here). Clerkship grades are probably the next most important factor. You should definitely Honour your Medicine rotation to have a good shot, but other rotations are less important (although still nice to Honour). Electives and research are also a very good way to show interest, in fact my Toronto interview focused on my previous research, and I would say they can probably make up for fewer clerkship honours somewhat.

Hey,

Another reason why ophtho may have gone unmatched is if the program is new. I don't know about Dal's program, but a few years ago, an ENT spot was left open at Mac because of this reason.

Another idea - perhaps medical students are clueing into the fact that it's VERY difficult to get a job as an ophthalmologist in an urban setting due to a lack of OR time. Ophtho residents are often frustrated by this - and most medical students don't care, because they generally set their sights on residency first, and then a job later.

first choice here as well @ Calgary Family (urban)

thanks for posting a copy of the 1st round stats~!

interesting to see that unlike last year where only Toronto and Queen's Family filled after first round, this year it's Calgary and UBC Family who filled up first ..

I suspect some people wanted only certain locations, perhaps their hometown, and opted for 2 or 3 choices at only 1 or 2 locations, to maximize their location choice rather than the medical choice. In a perfect world everyone ends up with their first choice.
