Informal Research Question: Texts on 'Principles of Medicine'?

Hi:

 

I am starting a master's in Literature and Medicine and am interested in medical ideology (specifically metaphors and modes of thought) used within undergraduate medical education.

Thought I'd start a little informal research here, as this forum has bee an invaluable information resource to me for many years now!

Most (all?) med schools have some sort of principles of medicine course at the beginning of (and often continuing throughout) the program. This is a non-system-specific course that addresses the generalities of the medical profession (I think!).

What has the general aim of these courses seemed to be within the various schools? More importantly for my research, what texts have been utilized?

Hi there,

 

I believe, for our equivalent of the course, at least two texts were mentioned, Shah's public health text and Hebert's "Doing Right".
