Medicaid equivalent in Canada?

I was wondering whether a Canadian medicaid equivalent exists to help low income families? As far as I know, the government does not fund any dental care and it all must come from either dental insurance or the patient's pocket (or often, a combination of both).

 

Although from what I have read, there are many problems to the Medicaid program in the U.S.A, including more paperwork and less compensation for the dentist.
