Alastriss
man, sitting here, trying to get through this virology course material, and just finding it so hard to study with this meds process looming about. In_Valid
now i'm curious... what happened?if you don't mind elaborating? i was pretty interested in albany, some of their research is really neat in brain-computer interfaces Well... the facilities were what disappointed me the most. After seeing the facilities at a school like SUNY, Albany just looked old and out of date. The one interviewer I had was hostile from the get go. She asked me a bunch of ethical questions and kept on cutting me off. It started out alright. Typical, what do you do for fun?, etc. After about 10 min. She says "alright, lets begin." I thought, oh crap... She says - "consider a terminally ill patient with no possible treatments. what are your responsibilities?" or may have been what do you do? I answered - "Well the most important thing is to try to fulfill what the patient wants" you know, patient autonomy and what not. I know you guys read Doing Right. She cuts me off sarcastically - "Well that is a nice general principle but what would you do?" I answer - "I would try to make him as comfortable as possible. Give him some painkillers." She asks - "How much would you give him?" I thought to myself - WTF? is she asking me the dosage? I answer - "Well it depends on his condition and age etc." She asks - "Yea, but how much do you give him?" That's when I knew for sure that this was gonna be a super unpleasant experience haha. I asked a question at the end - "What sort of research opportunities are available at Albany?" She was like - "Do you think you will have time to do research?" I feel that she may have typecasted me. Not to be cocky but, my GPA and MCAT were well above their admissions averages. She probably thought, oh great... another super academic Asian kid who only wants to be a doctor because of money, prestige or whatever negative stereotype. I understand that some interviewers want to be challenging to the interviewee, but she was just flat out rude. Worst thing was she was an old lady. Nothing worse than being bullied by a woman three times your age.

In_Valid
If anyone is curious. I got waitlisted. haha. There were actually two interviews. I had one with the Chief Cardiac Surgeon at the hospital as well. That interview went well. He was super nice and down to earth. He said surgeons don't regularly do the interview thing but he decided to do them because he didn't agree with how interviews were conducted at Albany. Retsage
Well, I booked my Albany interview a few days ago, but well down the line. Going to see if I get any acceptances before that. If not, I'll go. If I do, I'll withdraw.

Typical Premed
Just got an interview invite for Saint Louis University today! I was complete on 11/06. KennethToronto
She says - "consider a terminally ill patient with no possible treatments. what are your responsibilities?" or may have been what do you do? I answered - "Well the most important thing is to try to fulfill what the patient wants" you know, patient autonomy and what not. I know you guys read Doing Right. I answer - "Well it depends on his condition and age etc." She asks - "Yea, but how much do you give him?" I don't know the exact situation you were placed in, but the questions she asks are completely legit. If I was doing an interview and you replied "fulfill what the patient wants", I would consider it to be an incomplete response. It's more than just a question of autonomy. She was also asking you about painkillers not because she expects you to know the dosage, but more to see how you would reason out end of life and what is important or not (i.e. the patient might get addicted to the drugs because they need a massive dose to dull the pain, but if they have two weeks to live, is it really an issue?). schnauzr
*sigh* I haven't gotten any kind of positive news from any school since late September. I'm feeling a little frustrated now. I just wonder if there will be any more interview invites like other people suggested. I checked the interview invite thread from last year on SDN, but it seems like people didn't really post their late invites - there were very few. I'm glad we're doing this interview invite list - next year's applicants will have a better idea of when to expect a response from certain schools. Just one acceptance, come on! token
I definitely feel like I'm done. I think there's 3 schools left that haven't invited me, and I've definitely been skipped over. Luckily, they're not my top choices, so I'm satisfied. I wouldn't be surprised if after the last batch of pre-holiday acceptances go out they'll be a bunch of interview spots opening up for the new year though. Also I imagine a lot of people will start making up their minds once they go home for the holidays....
