Words of my MD/PhD supervisor to another pre-med asking him about medicine and joining the research team:

"You know your med application or resume doesn't tell me anything about your future performance as a physician or who you are as a person. It's easy these days to build hospitals in Sri Lanka or save AIDS orphans in Africa. Rather, it's just a reflection of your misguided desire to kiss ass and give up the next ten years of your life doing something that might never make you happy. So no, I won't take you as a student."

I died a little inside. LOL

brilliant. And probably quite accurate.

LOL I hate the generic reputation of pre-meds in academia

Well.. unfortunately it is still somewhat true. That is what I stay clear of the "premed" students at my university.. it can get messy;)

Yup, same opinion. I prefer to hang around people going into different professions though there are some really cool pre-meds I know.

such an awesome day!

left the lab @4:30 for an impromptu sunny afternoon date of pizza and ice cream with my girlfriend. Now the sun is still shining. Gonna longboard to second cup and work on a lecture I'm giving on thursday. It was really hard for me to defer my medical acceptance for 3 years, but days like today make it seem worthwhile to be a grad student. Yippie

What? No mention of running into me at school as part of your awesome day? How disappointing! ;)

2 days till my first real exam and I have a bazillion things to learn. Or maybe I know them and just need to review. Who knows. My mind is running in 230940834 directions.

I have no classes tomorrow... well one but it's learning on our own. Considering we got our anatomy course packs yesterday after 8 hours of lecture last week, I predict my day tomorrow will be spent looking at muscles and nerves and arteries of the back! With some microbio thrown in ;)

We have 2 humanities courses this semester (bioethics and socio). Seeing as I haven't done any in about 8-9 years, they're making me a little nervous! I prefer exams to dissertations or case reports hehe. Let's say I'm not aiming for any stellar marks in those 2 courses, even though I've always been a pretty good writer. The socio class is extremely interesting though.. prof is an AIDS specialist (especially in some African countries) and an anthropologist. I just prefer science most times...

I tried to go swim on Monday.. still no change which makes me sad. Not that I really expect miracles to happen on their own between week 4 and week 7. I can kinda swim for around 500m but have to be very deliberate with every stroke so my shoulder doesn't slip or something. I ended up again mostly kicking, but just that was enough that I felt it more the next day :/ 18 days til I see my surgeon, hope I get (relative) good news.

Thanks C!

We're the only schools in Canada that are not pass/fail I think. But anyway, marks I get this year really don't matter at all since it's really a prep year (so different program code than med). And even 1st and 2nd year marks apparently matter very little for residency matching. I imagine most people will get around the same average with a few above and a few below. I'll be pretty happy with an 80 (I think)!

Hey psycho,

Hope the trip to see the surgeon goes well!

Is med pass/fail in Qc?

No, but all Michelle needs is a bare passing grade, which should be no problem. :) Those accepted into McGill from Cegep need a certain grade to continue into first year medicine. All the students taking the preliminary year need is a bare passing grade to conitue on.

Clerkship evals, LORs, research helps. Contacts like everything else. I've heard some residency programs like rads look at pre-clerkship marks (but not med-p) but I don't think it's very widespread. Everyone says the goal is to learn as much as possible without worrying too much about the grades.

Merci, psycho ;)

You'll do fantastic! Do u have an idea of what residency appeals to you most?

I don't think it surprises anyone here to know I'll be "gunning" for neurology. Just need the whole acceptance thing first ;) Haha.

hehe hopefully this year is your year! :)

I really want to do ortho. Everything about it fits my personality and interests, and talking with my ortho friend (from swimming!) just increased my interest. I'll be doing research with an ortho (who's a friend of my friend) next summer for sure (confirmed, we just need to make a plan for a project). Plan B being getting through 2 years of FM to specialize in sports medicine ;) Of course anything can happen in the next few years, but sports is really my interest.
