Internal transferring at U of T

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm thinking about transferring from the St. George campus at UofT to the Scarborough one due to a few reasons and was wondering if this a wise decision. First, Scarb. is a lot smaller and that being the case, it may be easier to build relationships with the people there (profs, TA's, students, etc.). Also, there is a co-op program there in molecular biology which really appeals to me. As well, the specialist programs there accept all applicants and have no minimum gpa requirements (no competition). What I`m unsure about is whether or not the scarborough campus marks easier/harder/same in the science courses and whether the ease of acceptance into medical schools in the future is the same as if I were to stay at the St. George campus.

I had also thought about going over to UWO as my friend (who is at UWO) has currently suggested. They seemed to have great overseas volunteering and research programs and their marking also seems to be easier (just what I`ve heard from a few of my UWO friends). Also, I am interested in going to the US in the future and the gpa conversion at UWO seems to be better than at UofT.

With these reasons, I`m wondeirng if it`s a good idea to transfer...to UTSC or UWO. Any advice?

hey aquazangel,

im not sure about UWO, but i can tell you this much... all UofT campuses are the same. I am at UTM, and have taken courses on all campuses, and the marking scheme is pretty uniform throughout. I can understand, where you're coming from in terms of the number of students at st.george vs. at UTSC, but it is important to note that it is very program dependent.

thats my two cents.

cheers,

I'm at UTSC, and I'd say the difficulty between UTSG and UTSC is about equal. There are some things that are a lot easier at UTSC though, like 2nd year stats, and somethings are easier at UTSG, like 1st year physics. On the whole its more prof. dependent than campus dependent. And LOL, profs. couldn't give a damn about you at UTSC. I thought that was the advantage of going to SG over SC, you're saying its hard to meet profs there too?

There is no difference in terms of med school admissions. If it makes you feel any better there were 4 people that I know of (including me) that interviewed at med schools this cycle, 2 of them got in, 1 got waitlisted, I got rejected (:)).

I was thinking of transferring to UTSC as well, how do the 2nd year bio and biochem classes at UTSC compare to UTSG. Are the tests and exams fair? What's an estimate of the class averages?

Thanks

when i was at UTSC, all class averages were C-, C, or rarely C+ for ALL courses, not just biochem.

i know several people from UTSC that have gotten into medical school. it wont affect your chances.

Thanks for your reply,

Do you think it would be wise to take English, genetics (and other 2nd year bio courses) and biochemistry at UTSC rather than UTSG? (in other words would those courses be easier at UTSC? b/c I found the TAs at UTSG to be quite anal about marks....EX, they force the average for labs to be C+)

Do profs bell down classes at UTSC?

Thanks again

I think it's pretty much the same wherever you do it. I did ENG140Y at UTSG over the summer because I didnt want 12 weeks of English at UTSC and wanted it over in 6 weeks lol.

Yes profs bell down classes at UTSC. It happened to one of my courses. I ordered my exam and calculated my mark and my transcript mark was lower than what it should've been (final mark was based on midterm and final exams only).

Like I said ALL final class averages are C-, C, or C+. I've had one class that was B- and that's because it was a 4th year class with only around 20 students.

Profs. really cannot bell down marks at UTSC. So unless that prof was being sneaky...

@nonzerosum: 2nd year bio/biochem at UTSC is easy I thought. Not sure how it compares to UTSG though. But all the biochem people start hating their lives in 3rd year, lol. This is very prof dependent though, but some profs are really good GPA killers. There are only a few courses that I can say with certainty are easier, ex: stats.

There's some rule that if a class is over a certain size the class average should not (cannot?) be above B-. Everyone that ordered their exam for this class noticed that their mark was lower than it shouldve been. For one of my classmates it was the difference between a C+ (2.3) and B- (2.7). The prof REFUSED to meet with her to discuss the exam. I was warned up by an upper yr student that this was a REALLY easy class and the final class average *somehow* always ends up being 10% lower than the midterm average - and it's not because the exam was harder. That's the only reason I paid to see my final exam...to see how this "mystery" calculation happened. The calculation on my final exam did not correspond to my grade on ROSI.

This is why the petitioning system exists. I know of a few profs myself that do things that are against uni. policy, and students just take it lying down. Nothing can ever be belled down, EVER. This prof just didn't want to face the department heads with an explanation, which is what the standard procedure is for marks that fall out of the expected range. We got a prof (not tenured) thrown out last year because of the shady stuff she was pulling. Students really need to know their rights, and know what options they have in appealing marks. I've had a mark change 3 months after it showed up ROSI, lol. Just cause its ROSI doesn't mean its too late. My friend, who had a really anal TA that only gave low 70s to keep his average looking good, got the prof to remark everything (which is a right that students have, not a favour by the prof) and boosted his ROSI mark from 75% to 85%.

Does UTSC have an anticalendar and test and exam bank like UTSG?

You get to look at your exam once for free after that you have to pay. Also you have to pay $50ish for prof to check a mistake.

I heard this is basically the same at every big univ.

What univ. do you go to bj89?

uwindsor... profs here hold exam viewing days, just one day where you get to see ur exam...

if you want something regraded then you just submit a request in writing and the prof-regrades the whole thing... for addition errors they might just fix it on the spot (one prof did that for me).

i had a prof who just looked at a question and decided if he wants to add more marks and just did so if he felt necessary..i think it depends on the prof. we dont have to pay anything though

UTSC has the anticalendar, but no test bank that I know of. Getting copies of exams cost $30 and a lot of time. But I've heard of cases where they lost the copy of the exam, so they had nothing to give the student (stupid registrars ). Once you find a mistake on the exam though then petitioning is another cost I believe. I've never petitioned anything (formally at least ;)) so I don't know the cost.

Really? Not at waterloo. They are required to review it with you if you want it. No fee, no problem.....

Really? It only cost me $13 in 2005/2006 to get a copy of my exam. It was $13 for my entire 4 years at UTSC. That's a heavy bump in cost.
