trickybox
Hey viscous, I stayed with a student host for SLU, which was recommended to me because the Watertower Inn is supposedly horrible (the hotel closest to SLU). Definitely worth it, as you get an insider's perspective from a student host. As everyone would say, if you don't have an acceptance in hand, you should go to the interview. (unless you do aha) Also, congrats mysterychick and Gitanjali!

sopee
Well I had thought it was mid/late-sept, but now that i went and checked I remembered that I had trouble getting the 2nd science ref letter, and it took me all the way until October 20th to get it in...pretty late, but I guess it's a small miracle. Anyway, congratulations to you too. Are you going to do the student hosting?

moo
Well Wayne is just expensive but it is an accredited school and offers lots of opportunities for research. Detroit is also great for traumas. People generally don't look down on WSU, only premeds who don't know any better

JC5
I was told that Detriot has the most murders/year in US?Is that true? It's either Detroit, Baltimore or St. Louis, depending on how you define the borders of each city

moo
Chicago used to be way up there. But the thing is most murders occur in the ghetto, i.e., black neighborhoods. So as long as you stay away there, you're ok. Detroit is definitely way up there but there are good areas of Detroit too.
Flame219
Congrats guys! I can talk a little bit about Detroit and its living conditions. Yes, in terms of murder rates, it IS number one again (I learned that recently in the morgue when I was shadowing a forensic pathologist). But in terms of living conditions, the area around the school is relatively safe. Just keep in mind never to go walking in the street in the night. Many students don't even live around the city, some live in Windsor and some in suburbs like Royal Oak. Wayne is big on research as a medical school. But it's actually quite hard for us preclerkship med students to participate in research projects because we were not given the time for any serious research commitments. Most people who want to do research do them in the summer of first year, and Wayne has lots of opportunities for students to go to other universities ex. Vandy, UCLA etc, for research. deeman101
I had a low opinion of WSU. But that changed while I was in my interview. They really do care for the people of the community, which is in essence what medical care is about. Other schools are too obsessed about rankings, research, USMLE scores, etc. No other schools I've been to shows their level of commitment to the community. It warmed my little grinchy heart. WSU you will make you a REAL doc. That said, holy $%^& they're expensive!!!
CdnatWayne
Sorry Flame219 but I have to disagree with you about research opportunities for basic science students. There are many people in our class that involved in some sort of research (the time commitment isn't that much). You can visit the Wayne Student Affairs website for researchers looking for medical students to be involved with. Wayne also provides paid research/externship opportunities for the summer after first year. Wayne is a great school, the faculty seems conducive to changing the curriculum in response to feedback from students (i.e. the first year nutrition course is getting revamped). There are also many many volunteer opportunities for students to get involved in from volunteering at free clinics to spending time with seniors and everything in between. Regarding safety in Detroit, like any major city, it has its problems but the area around the medical school is safe. The WSU police are actually real cops from the Detroit PD and respond very quickly. There is also the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Security/Police. There is a security guard 24/7 at the main medical school building (Scott Hall). We have a brand new building (library, small group rooms, clinical training center, computer labs, etc) that opened up in July 2009 and there is a security guard there during regular hours 7:30am-12am and outside those ours you need your access card and pin to get in. I think Wayne is a great school albeit an expensive one. Let me know if anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to answer them!

I never said that there aren't many opportunities for research for preclerkship students, so maybe there was a bit of misunderstanding there. On the contrary, there is a lot, like you said. But the thing is, opportunity wise, there's a lot; time wise, not as much. If you compare Wayne to other schools, many schools incorporate research as an essential part of the curriculum (ex. Case), and others would set aside ample time for students to take part in more serious basic science research commitments. It's all relative, but is research not possible during first and second year? Certainly not. My roommate's involved with one too. However, compared to other schools, research for preclerkship students is not as big, and most of them would be clinical research (forget basic science research), and be prepared to work your ass off if you want to present or publish. Rather than research, I think Wayne State has a better grasp of volunteering and community help through its co-curricular program. The program encourages (or forces, depending on your viewpoint) students to be involved with the community through diverse opportunities around the area. You can teach little kids how to write, you can help in the food shelter. Want something related to medicine? You can volunteer in the local clinic/health fairs. That's definitely a big plus for Wayne.
trickybox
Do you guys know if most of the Canadians at Wayne live in Windsor or Detroit? I'm still torn between choosing schools but I'm looking at housing options, and I feel like I'll have a sense of security living in Windsor. Also, is the commute crossing borders (even with the Nexus pass) an absolute nightmare, especially during rush hour periods?
