rmitch8
Congrats on NYU! Here is some interesting info I was forwarded regarding air travel to the US. Definitely helpful for all of us flying down to the states in the next little while (with carry-on suits!). This only applies to YYZ (Toronto) but I'm sure it's similar elsewhere. Sounds like it's going to be quite a hastle from now on: Increased security procedures at YYZ have been implemented since the attempted attack on Christmas Day. The enhanced procedures at YYZ include: · Only one carry on bag is allowed (this bag can not contain any clothing or you will be sent back to the gate) · Presently, regular magnetometers are being used and there are no full body scanning devices · Additional screening is occurring at the ticket counters causing longer lines · If you have elite status, there are separate lines that expedite your wait · After clearing the initial security check point, additional security measures (including physical searches) are being conducted prior to and at the gate · Customs/Border control agents are asking more questions, thus increasing the wait times The one constant witnessed is lack of communication between security and airline personnel. There is no consistency in the process. Some people were let through with more than one carry on bag, while others were sent back to the gate after clearing the initial security screening point. Recommendations to ensure issues are avoided include: · Only one carry on bag. Make sure the ticket agent places a “carry on tag” on this item · Place all of your pocket items into your carry on bag prior to reaching the initial security check point · Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to your flight · Be patient and prepare to wait in lines · Since all luggage is required to be checked, be prepared to pay fees currently being charged by the airlines (unless you have elite status and the charges are waived)
ChicoMaki
interesting, i called air canada yesterday and they told me that i was allowed to bring a suit on as a carry-on, but that would be it. i'd hvae to check everything else
keith_015
Update to Security Measures As a result of a terrorist incident on Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 25, 2009, additional security measures were put in place at Canada's airports for flights to the United States. On December 28, Transport Canada put in place enhanced security measures for passengers on flights bound for the United States. Effective immediately, US bound passengers are not allowed to bring carry on bags into the cabin of the aircraft, with some exceptions. Passengers may carry with them one or more of the following items: medication or medical devices, small purses, cameras, coats, items for care of infants, laptop computers, crutches, canes, walkers, containers carrying life sustaining items, a special needs item, musical instruments, or diplomatic or consular bags. Transport Canada also has authorized the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to use RCMP and local police officers to actively assist with some procedures specific to the screening process. The purpose of this is to alleviate the immediate pressures at the security checkpoint resulting directly from the temporary emergency measures announced by Transport Canada on December 26th. Additional searches of passengers and their exempted items will continue. Delays can be expected so passengers are advised to arrive at the airport three hours in advance of their scheduled flight. These measures are expected to be in place at least for several days. Travellers are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behaviour to authorities. For information on pre-board screening procedures or air travel within the US, please consult the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website at http://www.tsa.gov/ or your travel agent. December 2009 Contact: Media Relations Transport Canada, Ottawa 613-993-0055 Real annoying! I was going to take a small pull behind carry on to get to downtown Philly quickly tomorrow instead of checking a bag and waiting for them to unload, but likely these stupid guidelines will be in place although the peak travel time is over. ChicoMaki
I spoke with Air Canada and Transport Canada and no suits or any form of carry-on will be allowed until the guidelines are removed. Hopefully my host has an iron I can use.

Angelia
Just a quick question. Do people send in transcript updates to the universities to help secure an interview? I just got back my marks from this semester and my GPA is 4.0 (which helps my upward trend). Does anyone know any information about sending in transcript updates? Hackintosh
to vteight, you shouldn't be turning down interviews until you have an acceptance.
keith_015
+1. You could really impress there thus positioning yourself well. Once May 15th hits, there probably will be a LOT of moment everywhere including EVMS. Just because you interview after someone else doesn't mean that you have to be lower on the waitlist. Plus, think about the cost difference between EVMS and Wayne.
bannie22
No point if you DISLIKE the school (and wont matriculate even if accepted), then you should not have applied there in the first place.
mystery_chick
I'm assuming you've also applied to Canadian schools? VTeight7
I'm assuming you've also applied to Canadian schools? It really depends on how good of a chance you stand at the Canadian schools... I don't make the GPA & MCAT cut-offs at the Ontario schools. My profile's a bit on the average side. Also some of my prerequisities aren't quite with the other Canadian schools. Anyway I suppose I'll think about this for a while and slowly prepare for the interview, and see if I change my mind in the next few weeks. keith_015
Good decision VTeight7. Congrats JC5, although why would you be very happy with this one when you have a large pool of other interviews at schools likely with better clinical experiences than what I've seen RFU to have? Dayne67
K I really don't know about this. It's my 2nd interview invite this season. btw I am on the alt list at Wayne State. a TON of people are already waitlisted at EVMS, the interview is sort of panel and has weird ethical questions, and it's just too far to be worth it at this point. I will prob call to turn it down tomorrow Definitely go to your EVMS interview! When I interviewed last year, it was a panel. And they did ask like two ethical questions, but they were not at all difficult. They really just want to see reasoning skills at work. Besides that, all three of my interviewers just asked about my experiences. It was a totally relaxed interview experience. even more relaxed than my interviews at other schools. Btw, I was accepted to EVMS last year. And my interview was in late February. I was initially waitlisted. But their OOS waitlist starts moving really fast (i.e. April) every year. You have a great shot at getting in even if you are waitlisted IMO provided that you don't blow the interview. And the whole Norfolk-Virginia Beach area is a great place to spend 4 years of your life. The school has a great standardized patient clinical program that starts right in first year. There is a very supportive and social atmosphere amongst students there as well. And the particular area that the school is located in (Ghent) is nice (i.e. has lots of stuff to do for young people). It may be far from home, but with the exception of Wayne State, every school in the US is going to be a plane flight away.
Illuminis
Since nobody here has even heard from AECOM yet, I'm assuming they're giving silent rejections to Canadians this year...
