I thought it would be funny to post how much money we're all spending on this blasted process. I'll go first:

MCAT Study materials: $160

MCAT: ~$225

UBC app+ trans: $115

OMSAS app + rush trans: $320 (one school)

Calgary + trans: $160

Manitoba + trans: $115

Memorial + trans: $85

McGill + trans: $95

Plus thousands on airfare and accommodation if something happens.:(

It will all be worth it in the end...

BTW, I hope you used a credit card that at least gives you cashback or points or something. That's a lot of cashback/points to be earned right there!

Not cheap :) I spent I think about 3 grand overall last year on everything - (prep, MCAT, application, new suit etc, airfare, hotels.....) but I had to fly out of province for an interview

Getting into Medical School : priceless.

That's not as bad as me.. I actually feel embarrassed because many of it was unnecessary.

Rough estimates, too lazy to find out the exact prices:

MCAT Study Materials (includes a prep course, of course) ... - $2200

Wrote MCAT 2x - $450

OMSAS Application + Transcript - $430 + $15

UM Application - $95

So, more or less, $3000. . .

And there will definitely be more costs to come... if I get an interview invite OOP, then I will have to pay for airfare, room, etc. ><

I know some people who've taken 2 prep courses, ie. both Kaplan and TPR... so ya...

But I also don't want to give the impression that I'm spoiled or anything like that. I've worked lots since high school and have been blessed to have quite a few scholarships in University ... and also, IMHO, if this is something that someone really wants, then one must be prepared to spend some $.

It's somewhat sad how this whole process of getting in to medical school has become so commercialized, to the extent that it is an actual, competitive market. The demand is so high, driving up the prices (supply and demand curves, intro economics, woo!)

But still, I would definitely not recommend a prep course... that would have saved me $2000 there. :(

Let's see...

MCAT prep course x1

MCAT x2

DAT supplies x1

DAT x1

OMSAS x1 (all 5 schools)

UofC Med x7

UofA Med x7

UofA Dent x1

Someone add that up, I don't want to think about how much that is.

EK self-study - $120

MCAT 1x - $225

OMSAS - $520

thusfar

then I'm going to apply to UofC, UofM, and Dal ($$$)

Then suit, then room and flights for OOP (if I get em)

Getting in: Priceless

I think I definitely lucked out (and, it IS possible to do it without spending that much money).

OMSAS ~ $300 (two schools, last year, don't remember exactly how much)

Suit jackets, shoes, blouses etc ~ $150

Ottawa interview ~ $75 gas money

Mac interview ~ $20 gas money.

Done.

This kind of makes me glad I only have one school to apply to.

MCAT study materials and test I paid for last year and my dad said that if I scored higher on this years test than the one I took in 2001 he would pay for the test. I did score higher, so my test was free and I only bought one review book for $60.

UBC application:$105

Transcripts: $35 (UNBC) and free (TRU)

Interview expenses: $100 gas, staying with my sister - free

So total for the year is only $240.

I think you need to set up a meeting with MD financial to go over your budget lol........

Well, $13,000 was for tuition and other school-related expenses, I don't think it's bad at all, actually.

NMP is my first choice (I live in Prince George) and VFMP is my second choice (my sister lives in Vancouver and I could live with her for cheap).

$520 on OMSAS

Probably between 1-2 G on MCAT (bought everything under the sun, including a second MCAT since I didn't write it the first time)

This is an expensive process no matter how you slice it. I'm probably going to have to apply again next year LOL.
