Mac Health Sci

Recommended Posts

I know because although I rejected the Health Sci offer, I do know very impressive individuals who are in there right now... and they are the real deal... note.. i'm talking about like the 10% minority at the top

You are describing perhaps 1 or 2 individuals in the program.

Mac Health Sci accepted a girl in my school who skipped literally 80% of her term tests and got her parents to tell the teacher that she was sick. Then, (as intelligent as she was), she would go to the next period class. For the entire first half of the year, none of the teachers found out and her average was super high because it was only based on like one or two labs. THIS is the calibre of the REGULAR health science student.

Whether you get accepted to the program has NOTHING to do with intelligence but with your ability to make bluff on paper. I got accepted to the program meanwhile many other people I would call more qualified than myself got rejected.

If indeed the purpose of Health Science is to award "deserving individuals" high marks because they deserve an easier route to medicine, the application process should be adjusted A LOT.

Further, the students and the cirriculum should say it blatently rather than claiming that they program grants you SUPERTABULOUS communication skills.

HAHA... read my earlier posts... I have a story as well... but yeah... the reason I am arguing about the Health Sci is that those truly awesome people are a minority... but they are there... so recognition must be given where it is deserved... And dont sell yourself short, if Health Sci liked you, then you were obviously good at presenting yourself/ be truly spectacular. In the end... that's what counts... Lol... perhaps your more qualified friends were a bit too humble? That was my downfall during the Canadian merit scholarships... sigh... its a tough world out there.

And this girl you talked about... she didnt have to write make ups? thats odd... I missed a fair share of tests in my day too... for valid reasons of course... and i always had to write make ups...

by the way, if you wont mind me asking... are you a fellow third year at U of T? cause you've heard of LMP

Haha, that is true... but then, if your arguement is that "qualified people" deserve easy marks, then would you also say that "capable" students at every university should also get easy marks? Why is it that ONLY the people who are good students at Mac Health Sci get them?

I'd say that "presenting yourself" is a subjective matter though. For instance, I got accepted at health science but rejected as a national UT scholar applicant meanwhile my floormate got the national UT scholarship and got rejected by Health Sci.

What I meant by more qualified is that I believe they would be better doctors than myself - they're the type of people who are just always thinking about other people. They're the ones who inspired me to try and get into med.

&Haha, I WISH. I'm in first year at UofT. I've heard of LMP because I've been trying to figure out what specialist I want to do. I can be the most undecive person at times ^^;

A lot of people in my residence are interested in LMP xD

PLEASE TELL ME YOU'RE VIC!! V-I-C? Love to have you in LMP! Haha... and are you talking about the U of T scholarships THAT 10 people receive each year and your friend won it? and yes... I do think the top people have it easy.. frankly, even though we are LMP, most of us have atrocious studying habits..lol! and once again... the ability to recognize ability in others is a great trait in itself and exactly the sort of thing people would want in their doctor, right (i.e. be willing to accept that they may be wrong, instead of stubbornly going about their way..)

What made you chose LMP amongst all the other choices?

I'm not sure whether to go for a highly specilized and more challenging program or to do two slightly easier majors. Next year, I'm going to have to commute which would take me 2h there and back.....so I'm probably going to have less time to do stuff. I'd like to get more involved around the campus so I'm not sure whether to chose something slightly easier. I was contemplating doing a neurosci/nutritonal sci double major...(I wish UT chose to give me a scholarship instead of Mac Health Sci accepting me -.-).

Haha...sadly not ):. I'm in Trin.

Yah, I am. LOL, I know two people in my residence that got it :o... Haha, I was talking to her about how to pay for University and she told me she's all paid for. Even more amazing, she also got the millenium scholarship so her parents upgraded their house (70k free money from that one).

Study habits.... LOL. I'm terrible at that ;-;.

It's a long way off for me but wouldn't you feel kind of reluctant to accept an offer to med school if you got one before graduating? I mean, if you study so hard, wouldn't you like to sit in con hall and get that degree?

no one said thats impossible... you can do med school and audit the courses for fourth year.... gutsy, but thats what i want to do

To add, making up a sob story and bluffing in an essay has no correlation with practicing as a physician.

I'm pretty sure the majority of your class would crumble in a normal program with a normal workload. Why else would they go so low as to pay for 3 years of tuition for a 4.0? There's only one reason: health sci students don't have the confidence to do the real stuff.

As a graduating student, I take real offense to this statement. I turned down lucrative offers to other schools and programs (i.e. Biotechnology/Chartered Accounting at Waterloo and Queen's Commerce among others). Now to say that I don't have confidence to do the real stuff is very offensive given that you don't know what I or other students went through or want to achieve in the future. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do, but the style of learning really attracted me to the program as well as the opportunity to take other courses that really interested me (i.e minor in econ).

I would also suggest that people stop "bashing" the program and the students within it. It is what it is and I understand that many people may find it an unfair advantage when applying but they still have to do well in an interview (which I know some people will not from within the program). Not everyone in the program gets into medicine nor does everyone want to do it. Is it slightly unfair? I would say so, but the system (nor life) itself isn't always fair. Look at the US system: very holistic approach, no GPA/MCAT cut-offs, large dedicated admissions committees, also interview large # students to select who they feel would fit their school.

But like I said, until the system changes, roughly 60-80 health scis will get into medicine this year and next.

blugga may have been harsh... but saying that life is unfair is hardly a good defense... as the future leaders... it is up to us to pinpoint whats wrong and try to fix the unfair bits in life (constructive criticism obviously). If we were gonna be always laissez-faire, then the world won't move forward, and women never would have gotten the vote, slavery wouldnt have been abolished (born to slave parents? deal with it)... etc...

HOLY MOLY, I've never seen so much BEEF in one thread. can we MOVE ON? it's been four years! if you want to switch programs or bash other programs, go back to first year.

seriously can we get along? we are all university students, we all get a degree, frankly in the real world nobody knows or cares about the competition to get into health sciences.

AND we all wrote the MCAT, that's standardized right?

Success in life does not depend on your program, it depends on you.

Stop feeling superior because of your program

Yah. Those two brothers are amazing (:. I don't miss any of their seminars even if I know the material xD\

& I'll try booking at 7am then.

I've always wondered. why do they want us to call the night before instead of give more notice?

I'm not "bashing" your program. I'm expressing my opinion. & I can't go BACK to first year because I'm IN first year.

& yes.. you all wrote MCAT and did interviews... but you also had TONS more time to do so since you don't have to focus on any of your courses and you can still get a 4.0 while we would have to work for it.
