MrKhiladi
when a a program goes unmatched during first iteration, does that mean that not many people ranked that program. If you ranked that program, if at number 6 and didnt get ur top 5, shouldnt you get in that program if that school doesnt get filled? Darla
If a program doesn't get filled it's usually bc not enough applicants ranked it number one or two. Some Programs like UWOs London FM have a large number of spots but are not as strong a draw as being able to live close to family in Toronto. Lots of people will rank London but would prefer Toronto or the UWO regional program. You are definitely right re. what happens if you rank a program 6 and you are denied your top 5, CaRMS will slot you in with your 6th rank spot. Hope that helps... Mourning Cloak
Two possibilities: 1) Not enough students ranked the program high enough; if all the students who ranked it matched elsewhere first, then no one will match to that program 2) The program didn't rank enough students. If the program only wanted the best of the best, and only ranked a few people (and those people matched elsewhere first) OR the program knew they'd pick someone up in the second round or after the match, they might not rank very many people (or anyone), hoping to leave their spot open. So long as the program ranked you, too. If they didn't rank you, you can't match there.

MrKhiladi
so if a place like uwo which doesnt go filled ranks u high, but you rank them lower, like 6 and dont get ur top 5, than u can match at uwo?

Yes. Read this. Golden rule: Rank programs IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE. How you rank them won't affect how they rank you.
MrKhiladi
hey darla, since you are from uwo, can you xplain the reason fm didnt fill last year.was it due to lack of applicants ranking or lack of good applicants?Having done med school there, whats ur opinion on the program. thanx
peachy
Isn't Toronto usually the only place where FM fills in the first round? There just aren't enough FM applicants for the number of spots in the first round.
NLengr
Memorial FM usually fills first round...I think anyway. I'm too lazy to look up the stats right now.
olecranon
ubc fills. most competitive for FM in canada.
rmorelan
seemed like the standard trend - more people are from or what to go back to a big city so those positions fill up quicker.
peachy
Ah, I see. I'm too Ontario-centric. In any case, there are lots of FM programs that don't fill, not because they are bad programs, but because they aren't desirable locations and there are more FM spots than Canadian applicants. I heard they tried pretty hard to recruit this year (expensive meals, cool freebies to all applicants). To put it in perspective they don't call it interview day, but rather "Recruitment Day."
