Advancements in communication technology have reduced the quality of human interaction

In the past decade, society has witnessed unprecedented evolution in technology. Communication technology is one of the realms of technology that have advanced to very high levels. This form of technology enables interaction between people outside of the norm of ‘face to face’ interactions. It allows for talking via the internet, texting, cell phones, social media websites etc. However the quality of human interaction, that is the authenticity of the conversation, is only maintained when interaction takes place face to face, where emotions, expressions and body language are easily visualized by every individual involved in the conversation; thus making it a personal experience and allowing for a high quality of interaction. Interaction via texting, social media websites doesn’t allow the opportunity to visualize and understand the emotions of the people in the interaction, thus making it very impersonal and thus reducing its quality. Another reason such technologies reduce quality of interaction is because it lacks authenticity. When interacting via text messaging, there is no guarantee that the person who you are interacting with is actually who he claims to be.

On the contrary, not all forms of communication technology reduce the authenticity and quality of human interaction. For instance, certain forms of technology have allowed conversations using the computer where the individuals can see each other; such an example could be the use of Skype. Since the norm of human interaction is ‘face-to-face’ conversations, such a technology keeps that traditional aspect of communication. Furthermore, since the individuals can see each other, they are also able to gauge each other’s emotions and expressions, thus fulfilling the normality of interactions and maintaining its quality.

In conclusion, whether advancements in communication technology reduce quality of human interaction is contingent upon the form of technology. In the recent years, there have been a vast number of technology that allow communication, however the ones that enable the individuals to see each other and have a so called ‘face-to-face’ conversation make it a personal interaction and maintain its quality Whereas, technologies such as texting and social media websites, the individuals true identity could be questionable and conversations do not take place face to face, reducing its authenticity and making it impersonal, thus reducing its quality.

Thank you a million!

A politician’s lifestyle should reflect his or her political views.

Write a unified essay in which you perform the following tasks. Explain what you think the above statement means. Describe a specific situation in which a politician’s lifestyle might not reflect his or her political views. Discuss what you think determines whether or not a politician’s lifestyle should reflect his or her political views.

Politicians are elected representatives in office. They present the views and needs of their constituents in the parliament. The goal of majority of politicians is to stay in office as long as possible. They try to accomplish this by making their constituents feel that their needs are being looked after. Politicians try to identify with their constituents by showing similarities in their lifestyle compared to their constituents.

Although politicians may present their lifestyle to reflect his or her political view, this may only serve to please their constituents in order to lengthen their stay in office. Quebec’ premier Jean Deuceppe revealed that he lives with a same-sex partner although his constituents do not support same-sex marriages and he voted against same sex-marriages. Jean Decueppe kept his same-sex marriage quite and voted against it because he knew if he revealed his true lifestyle he would be out of public office.

The lifestyle of a politician may allow constituents to understand the political views of the person they are voting in public office. The leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Jack Layton believed in natural medicine based on naturopathic treatments. Jack Layton was a cancer survivor and he strongly believed that naturopathic medicine played a major role in his recovery from cancer. The majority of Jack Layton’s constituents wanted naturopathic medicine to be covered under the Canada Health Plan. Jack Layton believed in naturopathic medicine and he introduced a bill for it to be covered by the Canada Health Plan.

What determines whether a politician’s lifestyle should reflect his or her political views is the appropriate time at which they make their lifestyle public. If the time is during an election and the revelation of their lifestyle would damage their reputation than a politician may not reveal his true lifestyle in order to stay longer in office. Jean Decuppe did not reveal his same-sex marriage because he knew that the majority of his constituents would not support him and he would not win the elections. Jack Layton strongly believed in naturopathic medicine and he made it public to his constituents because he knew the majority will support him.

Thanks for reading my essay!

The primary goal of every business should be to maximize profits.

Write a unified essay in which you perform the following tasks. Explain what you think the above statement means. Describe a specific situation in which maximizing profits might not be the primary goal of a business. Discuss what you think determines whether or not the primary goal of a business should be to maximize profits.

Businesses are established to provide goods and services to consumers. Business need to pay for the manufacturing of goods and the delivery of services. The cost of goods production and delivery of services can be minimzed by businesses through various means such as outsourcing production to third world countries where labour is inexpensive. This allows businesses to provide goods and services to consumers in developed countries at a high price while keeping production and manufacturing cost low resulting in increased profits.

Although profits play a major role in the growth of many businesses, the quality of goods and services must be maintained at high standards. The Food and Drug Administration is a federal company which provides food and drug safety services to the public. The goal of the business is to protect the public by providing high quality health education and services during disease outbreaks. The business is strictly regulated to provide accurate safety information to the public without charging fees. This allows the country to prosper because people use accurate information provided by the FDA to make decisions about their health and well being.

The main goal of many businesses is growth through increased profits in order to maintain a competitive advantage in the market place. Hewlett Packard outsourced costumer support services to India in order to minimize labour costs and therefore increase profits. Since HP was able to maintain a high profit by outsourcing costumer support services to India, it was able to offer costumers lower price for computers. This allowed HP to sell a higher volume of computers than Dell resulting in higher profits. As a result it allowed HP to maintain a dominance on the market place as the largest computer seller.

The safety of the products and service that companies provide determines whether their main goal is to make a profit. If the company such as Food and Drug Administration is concerned with providing health and safety goods and services then the primary goal of the business would be to provide high quality goods and services. This is necessary for the proper functioning of the country because if the majority of population are sick from outbreaks then the country does not function well. If the company is not concerned with providing safety and health goods and services, then their goal is to stay dominant in the marketplace by reducing labour costs and increasing profits. This allows the company to grow and make profits.

Thanks a lot! :)

A student's academic success depends more on hard work than on intelligence.

The primary goal of every student is to be able to understand the concepts being taught and attain academic success, so as to excel in his field of study. Academic success comprises of not only attaining high scores on exams but also entails understanding the concepts and acquiring knowledge. Hard work is the primary key to academic successs. It entails numerous hours of effort put in to master and thoroughly understand and memorize concepts being studied. For instance when learning a topic such as the human anatomy, hard work is key to be able to master this field. Intelligence will not allow a student to innately know the human anatomy, the different type of muscles or the different number of cranial nerves. However, repetitive hard work will enable the student to memorize and retain the relative knowlege required to gain academic success. It instills a disciplined work ethic in students and a strive to achieve goals. Concepts taught in university vary on the level of difficutly. However if hard work is put in, the student not only succeeds at understanding the concept but also learns how to deal with challenging topics with the appropriate amount of hardwork dedicated towards it. Furthermore, intelligence can only help with minute details, such as the speed of understanding a topic, however it does not guarantee success as it does nothing to further that intelligence. HOwever, hard work leads to learning and understand of new concepts; success is measurable to how well a student grasps and applies concepts and that is possbile by hard work.

Nevertheless, it could be argued that intelligence also leads to academic success. For instance, when studying a subject such as calculus which is made up of abstract concepts, intelligence helps out a lot. In order to understand complex math concepts, intelligence is essential to grasp those concepts promptly. Even if numerous hours of hard work are put in, if a student doesn't understand the concept he probably will not be able to attain academic success in that particular topic no matter how many hours of hard work he puts in. However intelligence will allow that student to understand and apply the core concepts of calculus more promptly and accuracy. Grasping of asbtract concepts quickly will allow the student to divert his attention and energy to a different section of the topic, thus allowing him to go thorough the topics of study quickly and accurately, thus ensuring success.

It can be concluded that academic success cannot be pinned to either hard work or intelligence, instead it varies with the topic of study. For an infromation packed course such as anatomy, hard work is essential as the number of hours put in to study are key to understanding and memorizing the relevant information. However with a course such as calculus that runs on the understanding of abstract concepts, intelligence is essential . Since intelligence will enable a student to grasp the abstract concepts quickly, it will ensure academic success.

Governments have a responsibililty to regulate companies taht provide necessary services to citizens

One of the primary reasons a government body is elected in a democratic society to protect the rights of citizens and ensure no violations to such rights result. Such rights can be extended to the right to be protected from methods of financial extortion imposed by businesses. When individuals cannot protect themselves from being charged unfairly or without cause, the government needs to step in and prevent such violations from occuring. An example of such an intervention is Harper government's attempt to introduce legislation to prevent cellular service providers from charging consumers for incoming text messages. Cellular service companies like Bell introduced charges for receiving incoming texts, which left users helpless but to pay even for texts that were spam or texts that they did not want to receive. In such cases, the user had no choice but to pay for such texts or give up their cell phone, which potentially incurred high termination fee payment. Thus, in order to protect consumers from being charged unfairly, the Harper government is trying to compel such companies to withdraw the charges and thereby, protect the rights of citizens.

On the other hand, however, there are circumstances when the government need not intervene in necessary services that are provided to the citizens. Currently, there are no stringent regulations for the use of herbal supplements and distribution of 'ayurvedic' medicines. The primary reason is that the consumers who partake in these alternative forms of medicine, do so knowingly. There is no pressure from companies selling such medicines on the potential consumer and hence, no violation to their rights occurs. The use of such alternative medicine is entirely up to the consumer, who is not under any obligation to use such medicines, unless they express their own desire to. Moreover, they are fully aware of the possible implications of consuming such medicines, which are not certified by Health Canada, as prescription drugs are. Therefore, in cases such as these, government intervention and subsequent regulation of such companies that provide alternative medicine, is unnecessary.

Thus, the determing factor of whether government needs to regulate companies that provide necessary services to its citizens is whether or not the citizen partakes in the services on their own will. Specifically, in the case of cell phone users, being charged for incoming text messages that are spam, messages that the user did not want to receive, is unacceptable. Since the user himself cannot control whether or not he is charged for such texts, the government needs to step in and ensure that businesses do not take unfair advantage of consumers. By charging for incoming texts, the businesses profit while the user unwillingly economically suffers. On the other hand, individuals who themselves chose to visit a herbal supplements' store or pursue alternative over traditional mode of medical treatment, do so at their own will. There is no pressure from businesses who solicit these services and therefore, such businesses are free from government regulation. Thus, the key is to ensure that the citizens do not experience violation to their human rights unknowingly or being able to change their situation without further suffering.

Only those politicians who have learned the art of compromise can achieve their political goals

The art to compromise is characterized by the person's ability satisfy one's opponent's needs while at the same time, fulfilling one's own needs. Such a virtue is of exceptional importance to a politician who is always battling with other needs while trying to fulfill one's own goals. This quality became of utmost importance to Jawaharlal Nehru when he was fighting for India's independence from the British Raj. In early 1947, when it became apparent to Nehru that the only way to attain independence would be by following Britishers' 'divide and rule' strategy, Nehru had little choice but to compromise. Although the division was against his own values and beliefs, he decided that the gain of attaining independence from the British had more 'weight' over the loss of a part of India and subsequent creation of Pakistan. Thus, by employing his ability to compromise and weigh the benefits of independence over the loss of India to Pakistan, Nehru was able to achieve his goal of an independent and sovereign nation of India.

On the other hand, the art of compromise does not always lead to fulfilling one's political goals. In fact, if a politician compromises too readily, it can reflect poorly on the foundation of one's social and political values. An example of this adherance to one's political values over making a compromise for political gains was seen in Gandhi's refusal for violent protests during the independence movement in India. During the 1930s, the insurgence of violent protests against unfair treatment by british authorities was apparent all over India. Such insurgencies gained momentum and had it not been for Gandhi's 'fast till death' plea to stop all the violence, it would have lead to India's independence sooner rather than later. However, despite the possible gain of liberating the indian people through violent protests against the british, Gandhi did not compromise on his values of 'ahimsa' and protests through non violent means. Thus, despite having the advantage of fulfilling his political goals, Gandhi let go of such a advantage in order to ensure that his true beliefs remain uncompromised.

Therefore, whether or not a politician should make compromises in order to achieve his political goal depends on his cost and benefit analysis. In the case of Nehru, even though division of India went against his nationalist beliefs, it allowed India to be free from British rule and becoming an independent nation. This gain, according to him, was of a greater 'weight' than the creation of Pakistan. However, in the case of Gandhi, the violent protests all over India represented countless loss of lives, which was unacceptable to his beliefs of 'ahimsa' and preservation of life. For him, such losses did not justify the eventual liberation of the Indian people. Thus, even though his political goal was that of India's independence, he refused to compromise on the loss of human lives to attain such a goal. For him, the cost was much too high over the gain. Indeed, such an ability to weigh potential gains and losses against each other and be able to make the right decision for the masses, is what makes a political leader truly exceptional.

Thanks so much for this!!

Education comes not from books but from practical experience.

There is no question whether or not an individual learns more experientially truly what a frog is by seeing a frog, touching a frog, hearing a frog than by reading about a frog in a text. You can read that the texture of a frog is cool, slippery and smooth, but if you have never actually touched a frog can you possibly understand exactly what a frog feels like? It can be argued then that education is at it's best when one learns from direct experience rather than through reading about experiences in a book. How can I truly understand the Aurora Borealis if I have in fact never seen them in action? A flat picture of the Northern Lights cannot capture the same incredible color variations that are made by the lights as they dance across the dark night sky. To say then that eduction comes from practical experience rather than books means that while one can gain an understanding through reading, you cannot truly understand or even comprehend what the real event will be like.

This is not to say that there are never instances where books might be the better option for education. Historical events, for example, cannot possibly be learned through direct experience due to their very nature. One cannot experience life in a concentration camp under Hitler's regime since it occurred decades ago, so there really is no way to learn about the intricaties of concentration camp life than through reading. Also - due to the danger and fear in experiencing a concentration camp, reading would likely be the chosen alternative even in the event that it were possible to experience concentration camps through living in one.

There are factors that should be taken into consideration when determining whether to use books or practical experience to educate. The main factor is whether or not the topic can be experienced. If the event is historical then there is no option other than to learn about the event through text. If it is not financially feasible to attend the topic, then reading is the best alternative. If it would be dangerous to experience the topic, then again, reading is the best option. If the topic is readily obtainable for students to experience, if it is not dangerous, and if it is financially feasible, then practical experience should be the form selected by educators.

Overall, one can argue that education is of higher quality when delivered through providing practical experience to students, but when practical experience is not an option one must consider that books provide a viable alternative.

Scientific discovery is rooted in the desire to discover, but there is no discovery so important that in its pursuit a threat to human life should be tolerated.

Society has come to rely on scientific inquiry for the perpetuation of the human race. Cures for genetic and terminal illnesses have been discovered and are being searched for in order to extend lives and environmentally friendly ways of creating energy are evolving in order to preserve the earth so that humans can continue life in the event that fossil fuels are completely consumed. Science is behind the extended lifetimes that humans are experiencing. For the most part, scientific inquiry has resulted in the ability to save and extend lives. So how could we possibly tolerate a scenario in which the pursuit of scientific inquiry results in the threat to human life? Despite the importance of scientific discovery, we cannot allow human lives to be compromised whether it be by testing dangerous substances on humans in the pursuit of a cure for a terminal disease, or by killing a human being in an attempt to obtain stem cells. No scientific discover is so significant or important that it is worth the death of a human being. Despite the fact that overall science has resulted in an extension of the age of most humans, we cannot allow discovery to be at the cost of individual lives.

Someone might argue that there are instances when a threat to human life might be forgivable if it is for the pursuit of scientific discovery. An instance where this might be acceptable is in the example of the search for a cure for terminal illness, such as cancer. If all of the typical treatment options for a patient have been exhausted, the patient has been given a terminal diagnosis, and the patient understands and is willing to go forward with a experimental treatment that may threaten his life, then we may be inclined to tolerate the threat to human life in the pursuit of discovery. This patient is willing to trade his remaining months for the possiblity that he may be cured - he understands the consequences fully and is willing to trade what remains of his life for the possiblity of a cure and an extension onto that life. In this case, surely we can leave the decision as to whether to potentially give up life for the purpose of scientific discovery, since it is at the decision of a terminal patient.

The patient's understanding of what they are giving up is crucial when determining whether or not this is acceptable. This brings to light the example of a small child who is unable to make decisions for herself. Is it feasible to allow the pursuit of scientific discovery in exchange for this life? Despite the fact that the child has legal guardians who supposedly can legally make this decision for the child, it could be argued that this is still not acceptable. Would the child choose suffering for the possibility that their life may be extended? In this instance that can't possibly be determined. This is an instance where the patient does not have an understanding of what they are giving up or signing up for.

The fact that a patient has been given a terminal diagnosis is also an important factor because it is not as though he is selecting a scientifically induced suicide due to psychological distress. He knows that his life will not last much longer and he is willing to exchange that for a possible new lease at life. The intention and hope is not for death.

As important as scientific discovery is, there are really very limited instances where it is reasonable to assume that scientific discovery trumps human life. Each situation should be carefully evaluated by independent parties. Science has worked hard to preserve and extend life, we cannot allow this good to be destroyed by allowing it to overtake the sacredness of human life.

Businesses succeed by taking advantage of consumers' weaknesses.

A successful business requires certain things: a strong clientele basis, competent employees and a high income of money. Financial success stems from increased sales of their product at an increased price. To be as fiscally successful as possible, oftentimes the business will take advantage of the weaknesses of their consumers to sell more of their product. In our current society, media and advertising has caused many people to evaluate their self-worth based off of their appearance or the image they present to the world. This desire to appear a certain way through dress or body shape, can be used by a business to increase profit by catering their product or advertisements to this want. Take for example, the Axe cologne commercials. In the commercial, a young man is depicted as attracting many beautiful women simply by using the Axe cologne. This highly unlikely situation appeals to the desire of young boys everywhere to be considered attractive and be able to attract women. The Axe company takes advantage of this weakness to cause people to associate their product with this desired outcome and so purchase the cologne. Axe has enjoyed a lot of success through these advertisements. If they had chosen to use a more honest approach and not taken advantage of their consumers' weaknesses, they would not have enjoyed such fiscal success because people would not associate their product with such a desired outcome.

On the other hand, when a business' main goal is not to make as much money as possible, they may find success in a way other than taking advantage of consumers' weaknesses. Certain businesses are formed for the purpose of providing a service to the public and so would be less influenced by fiscal success as by providing the best service possible. The London Transit Company (LTC), for example, must provide bus transport to the citizen's of London in an affordable manner. There is no need for the business to take advantage of consumer weakness because it is not trying to maximize profit. In fact, if the LTC did try to maximize profit by increasing bus fare, they may exclude certain people from affording the bus and thus not be achieving their main purpose. Furthermore, the LTC would most likely not even have much of a way to take advantage of consumer weaknesses since the main weakness of the public stems from their self-image which is generally unaffected by bus transport.

Overall, the deciding factor of whether or not a business will succeed through taking advantage of consumers' weaknesses is the type of business it is and thus the type of service it provides. A business that caters to the weaknesses of the consumers, such as ones that sell beauty products or clothing, will sell more and thus make more money by taking advantages of these weaknesses. Contrastingly, if the service provided by the business does not affect the weaknesses of the consumers, it will not see much success by trying to exploit their weaknesses. Also, if the business' main goal is to provide a service to the public, it will have greater success through simply giving the best service it can without taking advantage of the customer. The examples of the Axe company and the LTC show this difference. Axe is selling a product to the public and has greatest success through increasing sales. It makes sense then for Axe to use the consumers' weaknesses to its advantage. The LTC on the other hand, is providing a public service and so has greatest success not through profit but through the quality of the service given to the public. The LTC then, can succeed without taking advantage of consumer weaknesses.

You're welcome.

Thanks for clicking. Appreciated.

Evidence of some clarity and depth of thought.

Ideas presented in a coherent manner.

Adequate control of language.

Your examples are sufficient. The Axe example could be refined. You will need to present a weakness. What you mentioned is not a weakness. You could mention that the men have a low-self esteem, poor self-image, etc. The company would be exploiting that.

For the LTC example, you must remember that the main goal of every business is to maximize profits. The reason you provided for them to maintain a high level of service isn't the best reason. You should mention that they do so out of competition with other alternative methods of transportation: rollerblading, cycling, walking, driving a car, carpooling, etc... This will enhance your argument. There is a good counter argument to your example that people need to travel to get food, water, supplies, go to work, etc. The LTC could easily exploit this need/weakness and people would still take the LTC if the prices went up. (cf. TTC, New York MTA, etc.) Make sure you protect against this counter argument.

Lies are often less harmful than the truth.

Describe a specific situation in which the truth might be less harmful than lies. Discuss what you think determines whether or not lies are less harmful than the truth.

“A little white lie never hurts a fly” is a proverb often repeated to us by our parents when we catch them lying. A lie is when a person is knowingly spreading out false information, this is often less harmful to the greater good than the truth. A discussion on lies and truths often comes down the individual ethics on the matter of greater good. When looking at an ethical dilemma, one of the ways of assessing the situation is by assessing the greater good. This method states that if the greater good out weights the wrong doings done to achieve the greater good, then that is worth the wrong doings. If however the greater good does not outweigh the wrong doings necessary to get to that good, then the good is not worth perusing. Often times, when I was younger my parents had said many lies to me. One such lie was of Santa Clause. They said that there was a man sitting in the heavens and he was counting all my good deeds and all my bad deeds. They told me that at the end of the year, that person will come down from the sky and gift me with what I deserve. As I grew older, I started questioning my parents on this matter. In the end, they told me that it was only a white lie, intended for the good of the childhood me. They were protecting me from doing bad deeds to the society by telling me that there was a greater power monitoring my activities. This issue is very similar to that of man and religion. When man was very young, when civilizations were just forming, organization was very important. One theory according to many historians is that the scholars of this early era realized that organization is at the utmost importance of a civilization. Therefore they decided to create religion. Because of these religions, our human race united under one umbrella, they began working together to solve their problems. Man organized themselves into hierarchy so that better governing can be conducted. Man worked together in fear of a being watching their actions. In this context, the potential lie created by these scholars was for the greater good and in the end has definitely been the foundation of today’s society. Without religion, man would never have united and would never have cooperated with their fellow. The reason why religion can be seen as a white lie is because there is no proof that god actually exists in the world, yet people still follow the religion. Religion helped achieve the greater good that is our society today. This little lie created by scholars of the ancient times has definitely outweighed its wrong doings, and still helps mankind today.

The power of religion in today’s world is slowly decreasing. Today, man is given the truth instead of the lie. This truth comes into form of science. Man is told all that he needs to know to make proper decisions and he is able to use that truth to a much greater extent than he would be able to use religion. As time has gone by, the power of religion has slowly decreased, and the power of science has increased. People are rejecting religion and using Science to build their societies. In this case, the truth, science is much more useful then the lie of religion. The reason why science is more beneficial compared to religion is because there are many religions whereas there is only one science. The wars and problems caused by religion slowly go away as the power of science increases. Therefore, in today’s modern world, the use of science was more influential and efficient than the use of religion.

The line between truth and lie is drawn by the greater good achieved from those actions. If a lie is helping civilization as religion has, than it definitely is worth it because the greater good outweighs the wrong doings conducted by the lie. We are able to have a civilization which we would not have if religion was not invented. However, as we start learning about the truth, it is beneficial to bring the truth out because if we did not, than man would never evolve. The same wars of the past between religions would go on forever, the same problems will continue. Thus if the truth exists, than it is much more beneficial compared to a lie. For the longest time, Science was not able to answer much of the questions that were answerable by religion, therefore in that time scholars saw fit to use religion to answer question that the mankind asked. But as time passed, and science grew, it was able to answer a lot of the questions that religion once did. At this time, scholars decided to leave religion behind and follow the path of science. It is always more beneficial to follow the truth if the truth is available, however, when the truth is not available, a white lie can be used to answer the questions of mankind.

Thanks for clicking. Appreciated.

Problems with organization and integration of ideas.

Ideas are somewhat developed, but unfocussed.

Issues with complexity.

It is not a good idea to use the same example to argue both sides. This creates tension in the essay and weakens each argument. To strengthen the essay, you could pinpoint a particular religion and write about that, thereby increasing the specificity of your examples. You may wish to organize your argument and explanation better in example#2 to be more explicit about the downfalls of religion, or of a particular religion and how the truth will solve the problems. This is an important theme to the essay and the prompt which you failed to explore. It is also crucial to the counter-argument. The rationale behind the arbitration step is also somewhat circular and will need to be refined.

You are awesome - thank you :)

Prompt 2: Scientific inquiry is rooted in the desire to discover, but there is no discovery so important that in its pursuit a threat to human life can be tolerated.

One of the most striking features of the human race, as some scientists believe, is the creativity and curiosity humans possess for their surroundings. The need to understand and comprehend the world around us has always been of great importance to us. This desire to discover and understand our world has been reflected in scientists like Isaac Newton and Galileo. Throughout the human civilization, scientific pioneers such as these individuals have pushed the frontiers of science in order to better understand and answer questions about our world. This need to discover is also reflected in J.F. Kennedy's push for the Space program and his desire to 'land a man on the moon' before the end of the decade (before 1970). Although the space program had many inherent risks to human life, the program was funded and developed until its success in 1969. In this case, the risk to human life was acceptable as the program promised new discoveries and a major 'leap for the mankind', as stated by Neil Armstrong. Therefore, in such cases, the threat to human life can be tolerated when the result of such risks is a historic landmark for mankind as a whole.

One the other hand, the threat to human life cannot always be acceptable despite the burning desire for scientists to discover the 'truth'. An example of this is the tight regulation and ban of laboratory experiments on humans. Although, via experimenting directly on human subjects, the questions scientists ask regarding drug side effects would be answered accurately, the practice of such experiments is prohibited. The primary reason for such prohibitiion is the possible harm to the human life, such as physical or emotional pain, disability or death. Also, there are certainly alternatives to experimenting on humans such as using mice models and in some cases, using primates for experimentation. When such alternatives are available, allowing harm to human life is considered unacceptable and morally wrong. Thus, despite the possible benefits of human experimentation, which can help answer a number of questions regarding drug interactions, side effects etc, it is not acceptable to carry out such experiments due to the possible harm to the human life. In such cases, the pursuit for discovery does not triumph the value of human life.

Thus, the defining factor of whether the pursuit of discovery triumphs the value of human life depends upon the nature of the discovery itself. In the case of developing the Space program, at the time there were no alternatives to sending humans on the moon. The technological advancements weren't where they are today and hence, it was deemed important to develop the Space Program and take the risks it might pose on the humans that are aboard that flight. The program was a promising and major frontier in the human understanding of the world beyond ours. On the other hand, the ban on human experimentation reflects our moral values for preserving the sanctity of human life and ensuring no human undergoes any physical pain or stress at the expense of fulfilling one's scientific inquiry. Moreover, unlike the Space program which did not allow for alternatives to the humans in space, the experiments for determining drug effects and treatments can easily be done on mice and chimpanzees. Thus, the very nature of the scientific inquiry determines whether a threat to human life can be tolerated.

Thanks for the kind words and thank-you for clicking. Appreciated.

The order of the tasks was different from expected. It is best to keep the intended order to safeguard your score.

Your arguments for supporting the risk to human life in space exploration will need to be refined. You will need to reweigh the risk and benefit of space exploration. The second example was sufficient, but it may be best if you switched out one of the examples for another, or at least changed the order, then strengthen one of the examples a little bit more. This will enhance task#3. Task#3 was okay, but the rule could be much stronger. When would it be okay to risk human life? Not when there are no alternatives, because if there were no alternatives, you could just skip the experiment altogether. There has to be a strong enough reason to make the researchers go forward with the experiment either because the experiment is needed, or the rewards outweigh the risks by a large margin.

Thanks for the help PastaInhaler! It's very generous of you to offer this feedback! :)

Everyone who commits a crime in our society should be held equally responsible under the law.

Describe a specific situation in which someone who commits a crime might justifiably not be held legally responsible in the same way as others who commit crimes. Discuss what you think determines whether or not a person should be held legally responsible for committing a crime.

A society consists of a group of people who live under a common set of rules and regulations. These laws are set in place in order to preserve order within a society and to protect its citizens from crime. As part of a society, every individual is expected to obey these rules and face the consequences if they decide to break the law. Accordingly, the law should not discriminate by race, gender, or social status and should apply to everyone equally. For example, if a man and woman were caught stealing from a convenience store, both of them would receive punishment in the form of a fine or incarceration. In Canada, men and women hold equal rights in terms of voting, working, and participating in society. Therefore, it is only fair if they are treated equally by the justice system as well.

On the other hand, there are times when not all citizens should be held equally responsible for their actions. In the case where the offender is a youth, it may be more appropriate to make an exception to the law and provide an opportunity for rehabilitation rather than punishment. The Canadian Youth Justice Act ensure that the names of any criminal under the age of 18 are censored from the public. This precaution was established in order to protect the identities of these young offenders and to provide them with a chance to learn from their mistakes. Instead of spending time behind bars, young criminals are given the opportunity to change their perspective and learn about their moral values through rehabilitative programs.

Whether all citizens of a society should be held equally accountable for illegal actions is highly circumstantial. The determining factor lies in the age of the offender. Adults have had more time to form their moral values and are better informed in regards to the consequences of their actions. Thus, it should be expected that all adult criminals be treated in an equal manner under the law. However, a young criminal may have not had the chance to develop their moral values and may not know the severity and consequences of their actions. As a result, youths should not face the same punishment as an adult and instead, should be given a chance to learn from their mistakes.

Examples may be hard to find, however the essay would benefit from specific examples. You may wish to explore the nature of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. You mentioned something about it in the closing, but it would be good to explore that idea in the body of the essay rather in the closing remarks.

Progress often complicates as much as it simplifies.

...

The human condition represents a constant desire to understand the world in which we live. Through scientific thought and experimentation, we have been able to answer many of the questions that plagued our ancestors, as well as denounce many of their fundamental beliefs. It can be said, however, that much scientific investigation, while ideally answering the initial hypothesis, generates several new unertainties about a natural phenomenon. Since the sum total of scientific research denotes progress, this would imply that progress in fact complicates at least as much as it simplifies how we view the natural world. For instance, the Bohr model of the atom initially seemed to be the ultimate answer to what makes up matter: electrons circling around a nucleus of protons and neutrons. This seemingly simple theory was praised as the support upon which future discoveries could be mounted; however, recent investigation into atomic structure has complicated matters. Even smaller particles, called quarks, have been discovered, and the mechanism of their forming atoms has so far eluded even the advanced technologies of the Hadron Collider. Yet again, we are left adrift in a world where we barely understand our own substance, and our ability to understand it remains limited.

On the other hand, progress does not always lead to a total confounding of current beliefs; indeed, it can provide concrete answers to previously intangible questions. This is exemplified in the work of Louis Pasteur. During his time, there was a widespread belief in spontaneous generation, where life seemed to magically appear. This left little room for scientific proof, and thus was an exceedingly complicated proposition. Ideas as to how this occurred were only limited by the creative abilities of the human mind. Pasteur aimed to disprove this theory, and did so in a substantially successful fashion. With a simple method, he was able to demonstrate both the inability of life to spontaneously arise and the importance of bacteria. This discovery vastly improved the explanation of how life came to be, in that it relied entirely upon previous life. The scientific community could no longer be impeded in its progress due to the limitless complications of spontaneous generation.

Consequently, the impact of progress cannot always be judged as wholly complicating or simplifying. In the case of discovereies where the initial theories are severely confounded, such as that with the discovery of quarks and other subatomic levels of organization, progress has led to more questions than answers. Alternatively, with scientific inquiry that replaces an exceedingly complicated and unanswerable belief with a new, more humanly perceivable theory has simplified current thought. Indeed, the delicate balance between these two forces will undoubtedly lead us to continue pursuing knowledge about our world in the future.

Thank you very much!

Strong control of language.

The first example is good. The second example is sufficient, but there may be a stronger example available. The argument is not entirely clear how progress from a new theory is able to simplify things. You must be careful in how you argue this example, since with a new explanation there are bound to be more questions. What are bacteria? Where do they come from? How are they made? How do they grow and reproduce? How many classifications are there...etc...

The rationale in the arbitration step is somewhat circular. The logic behind the arbitration rule will need to be improved. The arguments don't fit together into one proper rule for arbitration.

Laws cannot social values.

...

Laws and society are inextricably linked. Without laws, society cannot function in a cohesive and orderly manner. However, there is a fundamental difference between adhering to laws and carrying a personal set of social values. The argument that laws cannot change social values relies on a separation between what is mandated by the government and what one believes in. This belief is inherent in the separation of Church and State, as is attempted in the United States. There, the law states that specific religious beliefs cannot play into the governing of the nation, as this should only rely upon what is best for the entire country. This would seem to downplay the importance of religion, and encourage members of society to retain a view of the world that is not determined by their religious beliefs. However, religion has not diminished in the United States, and remains an important part of the social values (including a belief in God, the need to attend Church, etc.) that make up a significant proportion of the population. It has persisted due to the absolute importance of religious freedom to these peoples. Thus, although the law demands a separation of government, which ideally symbolizes the values of a nation, and religion, the latter remains a powerful factor in the social attitudes and beliefs of many Americans.

Alternatively, there are some instances where the influence of the law is strong enough to completely change a societal value. For instance, many States are now passing laws legalizing same-sex marriages and giving them equal status to heterosexual marriages. While this still contradicts the personal beliefs of many citizens, a gradual movement away from more fundamental and conservative views towards liberalism can be seen in this instance. In the early twentieth century, even the thought of such a law would generate civil chaos; many proponents of such legislation were labeled as "Communists" or otherwise branded as un-American. In today's world, however, the law in many States does not discriminate against sexual preference, and society is slowing coming to accept it as a moral right. While religious freedom is still considered important, other civil rights such as freedom of expression are gaining ground in laws, and promoting changes in social consciousness such as this. Consequently, the social values of society, no matter how fundamental, can be influenced by the law.

Thus, whether or not the law can change social values depends upon how necessary those social values are to the citizens. In the former case, where religious beliefs were not phased by the division of Church and State, the desire to believe in the fundamental beliefs of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. won over the need to conform to the law. As is their civil right, these people choose to continue believing in something that is not also officially upheld by the government. The latter case, however, demonstrates an instance where the desire to conform to the law and uphold expressive freedoms outweighed the previous social values that had prevented such legislation. Preventing same-sex marriages was not seen as fundamental enough to completely denounce the introduction of new legislation. In conclusion, society will likely continue to exhibit a balance between upholding social values in the face of new laws and welcoming legislation in the stead of old beliefs.

Successful politicians are motivated more by practical considerations than by moral values.

...

Politics is a dangerous game. One critical error can lead to the end of a lifetime of hard work and dedication. To be successful in American politics means to harbor the trust (and votes) of your community from year to year, and to constantly represent the interests of that population. The greatest difficulty, however, is in being elected. Appealing to people who carry a plethora of divergent views can seem impossible. Indeed, many politicians find it easier to simply give up their own moral aspirations and instead promote the causes of the majority, whether or not those correlate with their own. These politicians consider this a more practical way of being successful in the political arena. For instance, the switching of political parties by Senator Joseph Liebermann several years ago demonstrates this. Instead of continuing to follow his own more conservative views, he chose to remain elected by heeding the changing demographic of his electorate and becoming independent of any political party. Thus, his actions demonstrated that changing one's own political beliefs can engender success in the end.

Practicality does not always triumph over personal moral values, however; some politicians feel the need to uphold their own beliefs and hope that these lead to success. This is evidenced in the debate over abortion. More conservative politicians argue that disposing of an unborn child is absolutely immoral and should not be condoned by the law or society. These beliefs largely stem from a religious tendency on the conservative side of American politics. From a strictly financial stance, abortion would be beneficial to the United States, as it would reduce the number of orphans, prevent low-income families from being burdened by unexpected (and in these cases unwelcomed) living costs, and may even increase the average educational level (since many studies have shown that being a young parent and dropping out of school are correlated). Nevertheless, these conservative politicians refuse to condone what they view as murder, and instead hope that, in the pursuit of their own moral beliefs, the populace will reward them with their votes. Since these anti-abortion politicians are still a strong element in American politics, their strict adherence to their own moral values has rewarded them with success.

Practicality versus morality continues to define the political arena in the United States. Politicians willing to uphold the beliefs of others on the road to success see the loss of their own moral beliefs as inconsequential. On the other hand, those who rely upon their own moral beliefs hope that their views correlate with those who have the power to elect them. The choice as to which path to take depends upon the political environment of the day and the morality of the politician. If a politician believes in "A," but the majority of society favours option "B," it would be financially favourable to convert to the latter and hopefully be elected. Likewise, if both the politician and most of the electorate harboured "A" as their choice of policy, there is no need for the politician to change their point of view in order to meet success. The only obstacle to this model is the moral obstinancy of the politician. He or she may feel guilt and lack conviction if they have purposefully changed their own beliefs to match those of others, and this may prevent them from being appealing to the populace upon which they rely for success. Those without much attachment to their own beliefs will be less affected. Thus, it is the willingness of a politician to part from their moral beliefs that decides whether or not they wish to conform to the ever-changing wishes of society.

Thanks!

A student's academic success depends more on hard work than on intelligence.

Thomas Edison once said that “Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”. By this he meant that although intelligence is necessary, person cannot become successful without combining intelligence and hard work. Academic success means to become successful in your studies and getting good grades and it can be achieved through hard work or through god gifted intelligence. If success depends only on intelligence and not hard work, then people like Bill Gates, a high school drop out, would not have been successful. An instance when academic success depends more on hard work than on intelligence, is passing and getting good grades in organic chemistry. Although organic chemistry is very analytical, one can only master is through practising reaction mechanisms and memorizing different reactions. Although a person can be genius, but he/she cannot pass organic chemistry without memorizing reactions.

Although hard work is important, academic success sometimes depend more on intelligence. Success depends more on intelligence on courses that involves more hands on and practical work such as lab courses or surgery. Ben Carson a famous Neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins is considered as one of the best Neurosurgeon in the country. He was the first Surgeon to be successful in performing a surgery on Crainophagus twins. He has performed many miracle surgeries and has saved many people’s life. Although, Dr. Carson was an average student in medical school, he is successful in his field due to his excellent hand-eye coordination while performing surgery.

The debate on whether hard work or intelligence determines academic success is never ending. But, academic success depends more on hard work in courses that requires practise and memorization while academic success depends more on intelligence in courses that are practical and are involved with hands on work. Success in organic chemistry depends more on hard work than intelligence while success in surgical courses in medical courses depends more on intelligence and god’s gift of excellent hand-eye coordination than on hard work, which was the case with Dr. Ben Carson. Based on these scenarios, Thomas Edison may have been forced to change his statement to “Success is 50 % inspiration and 50 % perspiration.”

Be cautious of how you interpret the quotation from Alva Edison. It can seem like you are using it improperly to interpret the prompt. The first example is fine, but you really need to emphasize how much hard work is needed and the nature of this hard work. How is it that intelligence doesn't really come into play here? Do reactions defy reason?

The second example seems a little out of scope. It is bordering on success in career, and doesn't seem to reflect academic success.

In politics, one's friends and one's enemies are often the same

Ann Richards once said, “In politics, your enemy cannot harm you, but your friend can kill you.” By this, Richards meant to say that the members of your party who support you, but are internally planning an attack to take over your position. In politics, your friend can be your relatives or the other member of the party who support the same organization as yours. But if you are on the higher position then your friends or are leading the organization or party, your friends may try to harm or kill you in order to take your position, although they still appear friendly from outside. For instance Asif Ali Zardari the current president of Pakistan has been accused of being involved in the murder of Benizir Bhutto who was the leader of Pakistan People’s Party and his legal wife. It is believed that Asif may have murdered Benizir in order to take over PPP and run for the presidential election.

In politics, person’s friend and enemy are not always the same. Person’s enemy in politics can be someone who might not agree with other person’s or that person’s organization’s philosophy. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi who was a leader of Congress and was fighting for the independence of India was killed by Nathuram Godsay. Although, Gandhi’s ideology of nonviolence was different from others at that time, he was still supported by other leaders of congress, but Nathuram Godsay of Pune based political party did not support his idea of nonviolence and believed that this may lead to becoming enslaved and other religion and countries, so he decided to kill Gandhi.

It is hard to say that your enemy is always your friend in politics. Friend is your enemy in politics when they want to take over your position or are jealous of you, but when a person tries to dethrone you as he/she dosen’t agree with you, he/she is your enemy but not your friend. Thus, Zardari killed Bhutto because he wanted to take over PPP, but Godsay killed Gandhi because he didn’t believe in his philosophy. Thus in politics, friend is not always the friend you think and enemy is not always visible.

Your examples are sufficient in supporting your arguments.

You may wish to remove the last line of paragraph 1 since it does not coincide with the rest of your argument-actually, it opens up a new topic that is peripherally-related. This will improve focus. Unless that was your argument, in which case, the argument was weakly constructed.

For your second example, it is fine, but you will need to refine your approach to how you argue it. Instead of Skype, what would be the original way of communicating? If you answered: normal, with another person talking in real-life, then your overall treatment of example two for your argument is weak.

Skype has to be better than the alternative; somehow enhancing the quality of communication and human interaction. If seeing a person in real-life, offline, and face-to-face is a possible alternative, then Skype will degrade the quality of that real, face-to-face interaction. The final task wasn't bad.

Hi PastaInhaler

I'm new on this forum and just needed some help on figuring out where i can improve on my writing samples. My MCAT is tomorrow morning

Thanks in advance

1)Voters should not be concerned about a political candidate’s personal life.

When a political candidates personal life does not effect their judgment in there position as a representative of the voters, it is not necessary for the public to concerned. Being so entrenched in issues such as what magazine a certain politician prefers or how many personal relationships they have had in the past doesn't give or take credibility away from their stand on tax reduction. For example when President Obama was running his campaign there was a lot of interest in the nationality of his parents and his ethnic background even though he was born a U.S citizen. The interest shown in these aspects of the president's personal life provided no insight into the kind of president he would become. Therefore that information should not have been divulged to the voters.

However when a political candidate makes a promise to voters to uphold the same values, it is necessary to then hold the candidate accountable to this. After all the candidate is asking voters to allow them into office on their behalf. It is important to understand when a candidate makes promises to voters. When such politicians as rob blagojavech who laundered money from the public for his own personal gain. This directly affected the voters so they had every right to have information about his personal life.

There are many circumstances to consider when it comes to decided whether knowing certain things about a candidates personal life go against what their campaign stands for or it has no impact. If a politician is laundering money then the public has a right to know as it affects the voters. If the personal information divulged has no standing then the

2)Great leaders are born, not made.

A leader who is raised from birth to rule, has been instructed in all the ways it takes to become a great leader. They have had the advantage of time to understand their role as leader and to be able to eliminate any aspects of their character that does not fit that role. A great leader needs their followers to respect there authority an aspect which can only be developed over time and with great influence. Queen Elizabeth, the residing monarch of England and all its commonwealths, possesses all these aspects and has dominion over and is respected by so many people. Had she not been born and breed to lead the people of England. She would not have many of the qualities that have captivated people around the world.

However some of the aspects that are found in many of the great leaders cannot be accounted for by breeding but by overcoming adversity and being courageous. In the same way that Queen Elizabeth was born to be a great leader her father king Edward was not he came into the position of King through the abdication of his brother. Even when thrust into this situation, King Edward still had to overcome his stammer in order to win the respect and support of his people.

They are many aspects needed in the character of a great leader some which are needed to be honed from birth and some which can only be developed from facing certain hardships. In the end its the combination of all these aspects that contribute to the development of a great leader.

It keeps the tasks in order and makes the essay better organized. This essay will stick out in the AAMC grader's mind due to the difference in organization.

As well, be cautious of using governmental examples such as the FDA. Their website is a .gov website and not a .com website. Further, the FDA is a division of the US Dept of Health and Human Services, and is not a business. It would be best to choose another example.

The HP example was fine. The third task was sufficient.

Im struggling with explaining the counter example. Would you have any suggestions on how to improve on that?

You're welcome.

Thanks for clicking. Appreciated.

Ideas are somewhat developed.

Evidence of some clarity of thought.

Ideas presented in a coherent manner.

Adequate control of language.

Your examples are sufficient in supporting your arguments. To improve the counter-example, you have a good example, but may need to focus more on advanced calculus. Most students can understand basic calculus, but advanced calculus can get quite difficult. You may talk about topics in calculus in which only a small population understands, or the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale to measure intelligence, or notable mathematicians, and how others through hard work may not achieve that level of understanding. But, it is important to have specific and concrete examples. You may know a lot about certain topics, but you have to make sure that the person reading can also "participate" in your discussion. Think of being a Ph.D. in molecular biology who is giving a lecture to other Ph.D.'s, yet these other Ph.D's are specialists in fields such as philosophy, political science, history of philosophy, communications sciences, literary studies, etc. You may need to illustrate ideas with concrete examples, or references, so that they can understand where you are coming from.

The third task is good.

I feel this essay will be scored a:
