Che.Kree
here we are... "Whatever we learn to do, we learn by actually doing it; men come to be builders, for instance, by building, and harp players by playing the harp. In the same way, by doing just acts we come to be just; by doing self-controlled acts, we come to be self-controlled; and by doing brave acts, we become brave." - Aristotle

Che.Kree
Good one. Doing is essential, unused knowledge is of no value to society. Contributing to the advancement of society requires doing in some form. Why speaking straight about the contribution to society. Let's speak about us first - nobody is doing something because s/he is thinking about the wellness of society in first place, this(the advancement of society) is a consequence of what you are doing and not a goal (or , well, it can become a goal but an indirect one, like, achieving that goal [good for society] you will achieve your primary goal [sell better your products, commercialize something you developped, have more patients because you studied hard and are a very good specialist... and so on,,,] ). And, not going too far, unused knowledge is of no value even for us and here is the same opinion in another form: "It is good to be helpful and kindly, but don't give yourself to be melted into candle grease for the benefit of the tallow trade." - George Eliot

I believe it is important for us to strive to be strong and to be the best of which we are capable in our individual endeavours. And ideally, our endeavours should be society friendly and not create harm. Being competitive and successful in sports is society friendly and makes us stronger. We can then teach others or translate our skill set and strengths in our other endeavours.

future_doc
Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment. The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows. - Buddha

Che.Kree
Doubt is essential for critical thinkers. questioning, and not doubt is essential for critical thinking If Isaac Newton had not been doubtful about his Pricipia Mathematica in his twenties he would have published it almost twenty years earlier. Che.Kree
To doubt is to question. not really, this is the weakest synonym for questioning.... to doubt = to be uncertain about something; be undecided in opinion or belief; to question = to make a question of; to challenge or dispute; to inquire;

Che.Kree
To dispute is to doubt. I'm not arguing about whether they are synonyms or not, but about the appropriateness of use ... and speaking about it's use in the context of critical thinking the doubt is closer to the insecurity/cowardness than to the dispute and questioning would you like to continue our dispute about questioning and doubt
