How young is your preceptor? In 2006, I was making 48K in Alberta in my first year of residency.

Well, I suppose he's not that young, as he spent a few years in industry after a biomed engineering masters. Probably finished med school within about two years of you give or take.

Got any good tips for networking? I'm about as charismatic as getting a hammer in the face and then having to chew on your broken teeth with your exposed roots. Methinks I'm going to have to partake in this "networking" business to have a successful career.

Since when do physicians need to network?

I think there is actually a lot of that - and with the doctor shortage coming to an end (even the OMA now is putting that in their news letters) there is just going to be more of that.

Getting the residency you want, getting the fellowship you want, getting the end job you want, pulling in the patients you want......

Lol i know but its a vastly different kind of networking compared to more traditional business forms.

Concept the same, approach is different?

Networking is extremely important, especially in this day and age when jobs (if you're a specialist) are hard to come by.

Gone are the days when you can easily find a job after finishing a gruelling residency. Unless you have connections, even having 2-3 fellowships may not be enough to get in with a group.

The only specialties where you don't need to network, really, are the general specialties: FM, psych, GIM, gen peds, etc.

I have run a company, and now a medical student - I don't think they are all that different actually. People skills are people skills and a lot of things seem to just transfer over :)

I think running a company is an extremely valuable experience ; most MDs (read: virtually all) have no business skills whatsoever.

Whatever sort of medicine you go into, you are ahead of the game.

Regardless, this looks awesome on a CV.
