Do what you enjoy--the key is developing skills that will help you become a better person, medical student, and--ultimately, a doctor. Research helps you develop some skills, and volunteer helps you develop others. There is clear cut advantage in terms of medical school. What makes is important is what it means to you .. chose based on your personal affinities for the activities and what you would learn from them!
