Job or volunteering during summer

It doesn't matter. Do what you enjoy--the key is developing skills that will help you become a better person, medical student, and--ultimately, a doctor.

Research helps you develop some skills, and volunteer helps you develop others. There is clear cut advantage in terms of medical school. The key is that whatever you choose to do, do it with excellence. Don't half-ass it just to put it on your resume.
