For those who want to know a little more about what is a PA and what PA does, this will give you some ideas. Will be useful for your PA applications too!

if i stuck to the med field, i'd totally love to be a hospital pharmacist if their scope of practice was more appropriate.

yeah, iuno, i love to listen as a multi-disiplinary team member who also is listened too, but i have trouble taking a back seat, if i play a game, i can't help but playing to win, and i can't stand working under people who aren't either better than me, or better team managers than me, lol, people don't have to think of me as a boss, i'm fine with the consultant number 2, who doesn't need to be humored or boss people around but needs to be influential... it's always a pleasure to know your stuff inside out and still work for someone who can teach though, but if you wanna be the boss, you gotta earn it imo, yeah, seems cool, but totally couldn't do it with my personality, haha.

Had I not got into med school, to me, this would have been my best option. I'm not a switch hitter, but I enjoy the game. :P

What turns me off about the job is this

This bothers me a great deal. Respect plays a huge role in every job IMO especially a job where patients' health/lives are at stake. If I feel disrespected, I won't be able to perform my job as best as I can and this ultimately affects the patients (as mentioned in the video).

Hmmm, I feel like respect is an important thing-but I think ego can be more of an issue for both MDs and PAs. It's true, like what he says at 0.55 s into the clip, but I also know PAs that have not had these types of issues, and I also have heard of PAs that do have these types of issues.

A good place to look is this very forum with some of the conversations between PA/MD/students. Some are good/supportive/educational and some are just ignorant and uneducated.

I think in the end, it matters what you are in the profession for. And if you have the best interest of the patient in mind and keep egos in check with a team based/collaborative approach, you'll be fine.

Everyone in every career gets disrespected. In any field with a hierarchy, there is opportunity for power imbalance. Even as a staff physician, there will be more senior staff physicians who may look down on you. As an orthopod, you may get less respect from GIMs. As a 2+1 Emerg MD, you may get looked down upon specialists you consult and colleagues that are Royal college EM MDs. The fact is, there is always opportunity for disrespect. It is present in all careers. If you think aspiring to a highly subspecialized surgical specialty in MD is going to avoid it, you are sadly mistake.

if you are easily hurt by disrespect, then you have to look internally -how disrespect impacts you is about the way YOU view the world, not how others view you.

i agree, i'm more concerned with not having an even say on someone i ultimately feel responsible for. i did an elective in consult psych and it was always like… great! oh… psychiatry, do you know when the nephrologist is coming, if you don't believe you contribute positively, and need others to tell you so, mitt be hard, and need an veal, i'd just not getting a fair shake, when i am the best consult on a goal (cognitive assessment to remove power of attorney as kids had been taking half her life savings for a ride, lol… iuno). i don't mind being trashed, my pet peeve is when other's don't give their best to a field that has so much impact on people. i guess it's expected, many of those types don't know why they're in for until they're so deep they're stuck.

we all have different skill sets, not matter the profession, i would argue that even beyond medicine, people choose careers for the wrong reasons and once your in debt and making cash, retraining is tough.

lol. Trust me, we don't notice.... It's like being a stud jock in high school and having the kids who participate in science fairs making fun of you...

But otherwise your point is very valid! Somebody's always going to crap on you. If you know you've done your best and your best is good, who cares.
