Do FM docs do call? I know there is variety, but are there discrepancies in call between rural doing a lot and urban family docs doing little?

Ya, there is a big difference between rural and urban family practice. It depends on what you call rural as well.

 

Urban practice - zero call.

 

Rural practice - 1:2 - 1:3 24 ER call coverage. Sometimes sleep, sometimes work all day, all night.

 

These are large differences. You can factor in patient care into this mix on a daily basis, aside from weekends when you are not on call (or if you are, then you are covering all in patients).

^ ^ agreed. There is a huge discrepancy. Most urban family docs do absolutely no call. Rural family docs may do a lot of call, although they still may do none, depending on the setup.

is there under some arrangements periodic weekend call? Thought that was factored in to the new funding models.

Rural docs may also do obstetrical coverage; the one I worked with as a med student did 24/7 call for YEARS.

In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't do that family med rotation there. Just saying...

My family doctor in Ottawa didn't do traditional "call" per se, but she worked with a group of doctors, and they all took turns spending one night a week staffing the after hours clinic for all the patients who saw the doctors in that group.
