What Reference Letters Schools Will Read

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share this bit of information in case it helps anyone.

I've been out of undergrad for over 5 years, so for UofT I am allowed to submit two professional references.

However, for Queens you absolutely need to submit an academic reference letter.

I was wondering how the schools chose which letters to read, so got in touch with Queens and UofT.

Queens:

They will read all the letters they receive. So in my case they will end up reading two professional letters and one academic. They reminded me that this isn't necessarily an advantage, because one of your letters might not be as favourable as the others.

UofT:

They read the first two letters, in R1 and R2.

(Though if you mess up the order, all you need to do is call them once you've applied, to tell them which two letters they should read).

Just something to keep in mind if you're in a similar situation.

Good luck everyone!
