limpkin21
I'm interested in peds neurology. I was wondering if, instead of doing the 5-year pediatric neurology residency program, if it is still possible to do 3 years of pediatric residency, then sub-specialize in peds neurology for 3 more years? On the CaRMS website, peds neurology is listed under the pediatric subspecialty match (psm), but there is no data on whether anyone matched to it in the last year. Thanks in advance for the help & input!
gangliocytoma
Pediatric residency is 4 yrs from my understanding and the fellowship is 3. Just curious as to why you want to do 7 years of training vs 5 years. Seems like a much simpler route to just do 5 yr peds neuro instead of having to go through a second match. xiphoid
It's listed under the PSM match but there haven't been any spots in the past few years I believe. It's a relatively new R1 specialty, so that may be why it is still listed under PSM. Pediatrics --> peds neurology isn't a possibility, but I believe neurology --> peds neurology is possible. But you would be doing many extra years of training (5 years for peds neuro compared to 5 years neuro + 3 years peds neuro for a total of 8 years). LostLamb
peds neuro is not a competitive R1 specialty. If it is what interests you, then apply directly. Be aware that the job outlook isn't great at this time.
bearded frog
I think you can still sub-specialize into peds neuro from peds, but since the direct entry is non-competitive, there hasn't been any applicants recently.
