Or if your working on a 4.3 scale, I had around a 4.15

Hi Everyone...

I know your all very nervous NOW....about 4 Hours ago (3:23 pm) I got my invitation for my interview. I hope the following will help in some ways for those In Province (I'm from U of T and resident there all my life).

I'm a 4th year student, 1st time applying to U ottawa meds..

MY stats:

WGPA (OMSAS): 3.88 , chem specialist program

I don't speak french at all, so Anglo is the only way!!!!!

My two really close friends also got there emails at about same time. Similar GPA's and 1 of them was a third year student...so good luck to all. Be looking forward to March...

Cheers, :D

I'm in the same boat as you guys, especially mcatsucks.

4.0GPA (94% avg), 48 item full sketch, 3 years research ,etc etc....but I guess it's the whole THIRD YEAR status that cancels all that out.

I read the msg about the 'official call' to ottawa. but i'm still in disbelief...I guess i need some time for reality to kick in:(

We should have a support group: RPM ( rejected pre-meds) anyone care to join?

I think we are in the same boat... Reality check...Whether it is 3rd yr or just that things are just getting more difficult to get in due to #s and the bar is being raised. Good luck to everyone... this is not going to be easy... even with all the credentials!!

no invite for me. I'm actually kind of surprised since I was thinking that I would receive an invite. I'm OOP, 3.98 weighted GPA (according to ottawa's weighing scheme) with tons of student government and extracurriculars, as well as awards and research and I'm a fourth year. I guess the bar has really been raised this year because of the increase in applicants. anyways, it's fair to say im prettyupset since ottawa was on my top three choices of medical schools (along with Mcgill and U of T).

good luck to all the applicants that did get interview invites

I received an interview from Ottawa this year, english stream.

In-province (UT - 4th year, specialist in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology)

3.89 wGPA (using OMSAS GPA scale) / 3.94 wGPA (UT scale)

Research experience (including publications)

Long-term commitment ECs (sports related)

Almost no volunteering experience.

I don't know if it mattered, but I re-entered my entire sketch 6am the day it was due so that all the items would be listed in chronological order for Ottawa when they print it out.

Hi guys,

CONGRATULATIONS to those who got interviews, that's amazing and I look forward to meeting you over the next few months :D

Also, there seems to be some misunderstanding regarding the whole 3rd year issue. Ottawa does NOT discriminate against 3rd years in any way. Initially it looks at the wgpa and subsequently at each applicant's profile. The interviewees are selected based on their 48 item sketch, NOT based on the year of their undergraduate education.

I know it's difficult to receive the answer that you were not expecting, but as hard as it is, I would recommend to look at it as a growing experience. Nothing in life ever comes easily and it is experiences like this one unfortunately that make us stronger and more prepared to handle the real life that's waiting for us out there. Medicine, especially, is a career that will come with a lot of disappointments and challenges. If one is to make through med school and residency, one needs to learn to learn to roll with the punches, to deal stress and with hearing things that you don't want to hear.

I know that at the moment it seems like getting in is the hardest part, but the reality is that staying in, dealing with everyday stresses and demands is much much more challenging. I also rememeber complaining about the admissions process when I was applying and how silly it is, but the further through med school I go, the more I understand why it is so rigorous...

In any case, the most important thing is to stay positive - this is just a glitch in your path toward the career that you've all chosen. Don't ever let this or any other obstacle get in the way of what you want to and are capable of achieving :)

Good luck to all the interviewees! Don't be nervous, try to have fun during your interview day :)

Hey guys,

Well, I've talked to people on admissions and they've told me that 3rd years are not given as many points as 4th years to begin with. This seems to explain the few 3rd year interviews. One more thing to add is that 4th years have 1 extra year to pack in activities.

I don't think third years are necessarily discriminated against - you could have a third year who has already completed a degree and done other stuff, who would have as much (if not more) life experience than a 4th year who went straight to uni.

That being said, i haven't heard anything. But until i get a letter from ottawa u telling me to sod off, i'm not ruling out my chances. Some call it hope, some call it disillusionment, both call it stressful.

And yes, i'm definitely down for a pre-med student consolation drink fest and sympathy party if anyone else is in :P

Although I'm in 4th year and posted what my outcome was above....I just wanted to say that treehuggingbiologist made one of the most reflective statement about all of US.

Either your 4th or 3rd year we all have and had those feelings of nervousing and contemplating about how the process works....

Good luck to u treebiologist....and I'm sure your effort will pay off soon....let us know what happens

Me :)
