anon200
I'm in 3rd year now, wondering how competitive optho really is and if it's too late to try and apply now? I have no research in this specialty and no electives due to covid. Any tips/advice would be very appreciated!
jb24
It's never "too late" but realistically not having any electives, relationships with the faculty, or research exposure will make for a near insurmountable hurdle. However, each year people make relatively last minute switches into competitive specialties and manage to shine on rotations. They are remembered during interview season. These kinds of stories are rare though, and these students often possess outstanding qualities. I'd say go for it, but you will have to get some fourth year rotations in ophthalmology. Good luck.
